 Course Description  

Instruction on safety topics and practices specifically related to industrial work environments. Topics include personal protective equipment, safety working with heavy industrial equipment, energy lock-out/tag-out procedures, material handling, electrical safety, machine guarding, working with hazardous materials, fire prevention, hazard identification and control, and safety inspection practices. Instruction in CPR included.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Understand state and federal workplace regulations as they apply to a manufacturing-related environment (OSHA, WISHA, Employee/Employer Rights and Responsibilities, etc.)
  2. Understand the origin & organization of rules that govern the workplace as they apply to accidents, hazards, risks, & safety plans (hazard analysis, workplace inspections, accident prevention & accident investigation, etc.)
  3. Recognize the importance of an effective Hazard Communication (HazCom) program & Hazardous Waste Training (regulatory requirements for EPA, WA State DOE hazardous waste management, DOT requirements for shipment of hazardous waste, handling DOE on-site inspections, correct use of Personal Protective Equipment-PPE, etc.)
  4. Understand the definition of an emergency situation and the elements of an emergency plan (importance of planning & training to protect safety of personnel).
  5. Recognize the danger of fire in the workplace & regulatory requirements of workplace fire protection programs (classes of fire, portable fire extinguishers, fire prevention strategies, emergency response, use of PPE, etc.)
  6. Understand the different types of PPE, their application, limitations, regulatory requirements & use of respiratory protection, including proper selection & use of respiratory protection.
  7. Understand the regulatory requirements and safety issues in regards to use of heavy industrial machinery in the workplace (cranes, forklifts, conveyor systems, etc.)
  8. Understand the regulatory requirements for the proper use of ladders, scaffolding, and stairways and related safety issues found in the workplace.
  9. Understand the regulatory requirements for proper use of hand & power tools, potential hazards & safety precautions.
  10. Recognize the presence of hearing hazards in the workplace (principles of noise & sound measurement, hearing protection devices, etc.)
  11. Understand the regulatory requirements and definitions for Lock-Out/Tag-Out & the correct procedures to follow; know how to use the various Lock-Out/Tag-Out devices.
  12. Review the various methods of preventing Ergonomic injuries, the need for Ergonomic Training, the regulatory requirements for training, how injuries occur & the specific body areas that are most susceptible to injury (includes fall protection, moving/lifting techniques, center of gravity, etc.)
  13. Receive a CPR card if the student successfully completes the AHA CPR exam.
