 Course Description  

Introduction to nursing as a profession, role of the licensed practical nurse, nursing process, pharmacology concepts, and fundamental skills of basic nursing care. Focuses on principles and skills necessary to meet the basic physical and psychosocial needs of patients. Practical nursing students only.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisite: NURS 136, ENGL 101, HMATH 100, and current CNA certification.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the steps of assessment and diagnosis as they relate to the Nursing Process and apply to the licensed practical nurse (LPN).
  2. Describe introductory concepts related to nursing as a profession and roles of the LPN.
  3. Identify various health care delivery systems. Identify legal and ethical practice standards for the LPN.
  4. Demonstrate fundamental nursing skills: Vital Signs, Health History, and physical assessment.
  5. Describe basic concepts of anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system and musculoskeletal system.
  6. Describe introductory concepts of nutrition and fluid, Electrolyte and acid-base balance.
  7. Identify basic human needs related to physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural diversity.
  8. Explain basic concepts of pharmacology.

  1. The Nursing Process: Assessment & Diagnosis. Nursing history, roles of the LPN.
  2. Nursing and the health care system. Scope of nursing practice.
  3. Vital signs, health history physical assessment.
  4. Fundamentals of oxygen delivery and assisting with respirations, and musculoskeletal function.
  5. Basic nutrition and diet therapy, introduction to fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance.
  6. Basic human needs: physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural. Pharmacology and the nursing process.
