 Course Description  

Focuses on the nursing care for individual experiencing complex alterations in respiratory, neurological, integumentary and cardiovascular systems. Includes psychological, sociocultural, spiritual and developmental factors. Integrates pharmacology, nutrition, health-teaching and communication. Provision and management of care to promote, and maintain and restore health in acute care and community settings.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Describe physical assessment findings related to complex alterations in the foloowing body systems and/or state of being: emergent cardiac events, endocrine system, pregnancy, fetal well being, stages of labor and newborn care.
  2. Discuss the psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual assessment of patients and families experiencing alteration in emergent cardiac events, endocrine system, pregnancy, fetal well being, stages of labor and newborn care.
  3. Describe the impact of alterations on developments task in the childearing family and those in acute care.
  4. Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care in both the acute care and community environments.
  5. Analyze health promotion activities in acute care and community settings amoung childbearing families and those experiencing complex illnesses.
  6. Analyze and evaluate collected data reflecting the response of the childbearing woman and the neonate and emergent cardiac events, and endocrine system.
  7. Analyze how differing cultures and ethinicities respond in during childbearing and cardiac emergency situations.
  8. Develop a nursing plan of care for the childbearing woman and her family and clients in the actue care setting.
  9. Monitor and evaluate collected data that reflects the response of the childbearing woman and the neonate and medical surgical cients to pharmacological therapy.
  10. Monitor and evaluate colleted data that refelcts the response of the childbearing woman and the neonate and medical surgical clients to nutritional therapy.
  11. Develop a nursing care plan that addresses the health education needs of the childbearing family and those in acute care.
  12. Demonstrate psychomotor skills related to clients in selected aggregate populations.
  13. Relate personal and professional accountability in the evolving registered nurse role to legal and ethical guidelines.
  14. Demonstrate use of sppropriate communication skills when interacting with all clients and families.
  15. Discuss the various aspects of management used in nursing including professional communication with team members.
  16. Demonstrate the ability to identify and critique one's own values, beliefs, attitudes and performance and develop a plan for needed improvement identifying the legal and ethical issues that have impacted the childbearing family and acute care clients.
  17. Apply ethical and legal preedence to critical thinking exercises dealing with nurse delegation and care.
  18. Analyze and integrate introductory components of the research process into the role of the associate degree nurse.
