Covers operation and maintenance of sterndrive and saildrive types of marine drive trains. Concentrates on preventative maintenance and service procedures for sterndrive and saildrive units.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Understand the drive train in sterndrives, saildrives, and pod drives.
  2. Visually identify common sterndrive models by sight.
  3. Identify sterndrive models using serial and model number ID plates.
  4. Determine lubrication requirements based on model and type of drive.
  5. Visually identify common saildrive models by sight.
  6. Identify saildrives using model and serial number ID plates.
  7. Determine lubrication requirements based on model and type of saildrive.
  8. Drain and refill gear case lubricant using proper lubricant without making a mess.
  9. Visually identify common pod drives such as Volvo IPS and Cummins/Mercruiser Zeus drives.
  10. Pressure check gearbox to determine condition of shaft seals.
  11. Check propeller shaft for fun out using dial indicator.
  12. Remove and replace propeller shaft and seals on common sterndrives.
  13. Remove and replace water pump impeller on older sterndrives.
  14. Check and adjust shift mechanism for proper operation.
  15. Check and adjust steering mechanism on sterndrives.
  16. Service universal joints by removing sterndrive from transom assembly.
  17. Remove and replace universal joints.
  18. Check condition of gimball bearing.
  19. Check engine alignment to transom assembly using alignment test bar.
  20. Inspect hydraulic trim/tilt assembly for proper operation.
  21. Adjust trim limit switch and tilt limit switch.
