 Course Description  

Introduction and orientation to Academy. Covers decorum, uniform, esprit de corps, professional conduct and ethical behavior. Includes NIMS Incident Command Systems module self-study, and units covering harassment, bias policing, leadership, human relations, and baseline physical fitness assessment.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Understand the overarching rules governing individual conduct in the Parks Law Enforcement Academy.
  2. Recite the requirements for uniform, personal appearance, hygiene, and professional bearing in the industry.
  3. Name and thoroughly explain at least ten foundational ethical values attached to the role of protection officers.
  4. Define and differentiate between Command and General Staff as it relates to Incident Command Systems, and identify the components of each.
  5. Understand the fundamentals of succession leadership in land management-based agencies, and relate important elements of mission, vision, values, goals, objectives, teamwork and achieving consensus.
  6. Know expected workplace behaviors and consequences for sexual or workplace harassment under Federal and state laws.
  7. Define bias policing, its practices, and differentiate between bias and prejudice.
  8. Understand issues confronting public safety officers in terms of human relations in the workplace and in dealing with the public.
  9. Discuss issues facing the public safety officer when working within culturally-diverse populations, and strategies for effectiveness in policing within a pluralistic society.
  10. Establish a personal physical fitness baseline in accordance with the Federal Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB) and/or the Washington State Physical Abilities Test Core (PATC).
