 Course Description  

A continuation of CHEM& 241. For students majoring in chemistry or biology, or pursuing graduate degrees in medicine or pharmacy. Radical reactions, infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, preparation and reactions of alcohols, ethers, and epoxides, conjugated systems and pericyclic reactions, aromaticity and aromatic substitution reactions.


Prerequisite: Completed ENGL& 101 with a grade of 2.0 or higher. CHEM& 163 with a 2.0 or higher. CHEM& 241 with a 2.0 or higher.

Course Contents

  1. IUPAC and common nomenclature of alcohols, ethers, and derivatives of benzene.
  2. Radical halogenation, oxidation-reduction, organometallic reactions, ring-opening of epoxides, pericyclic reactions, electrophilic aromatic substitution, and nucleophilic aromatic substitution.
  3. Synthesis of alcohols, ethers, epoxides, dienes, and derivatives of benzene.
  4. Theory of infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
  5. Analysis of data obtained from infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
