 Course Description  

Study of theories and basic techniques of collision investigation. Learn terminology, preparation of appropriate documents and formulate speed from skid, scuff and vehicle damage; how to collect, identify, and preserve traffic collision data for courtroom preparation.

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate proper procedures for misdemeanor and felony vehicle stops.
  2. Legal, safe, orderly and effective search of vehicles.
  3. Identify areas of the vehicle commonly used to conceal weapons or contraband.
  4. Recognize indicators of persons driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  5. Demonstrate proper techniques for violator contacts.
  6. Demonstrate proper techniques for issuing citations and making safe arrests involving traffic situations.
  7. State the first duties of an officer at the scene of an accident.
  8. Describe physical evidence to note and record in an accident investigation.
  9. Identify the tools essential to managing the scene and conducting the investigation.
  10. Recognize potential hazards at the scene and prescribe remedies.
  11. State procedures for protection of personal property at accident scenes.
  12. Understand the role of enforcement actions in the accident prevention program.
  13. Develop an acceptable accident report from a simulated incident complete with scaled diagram and narrative.
  14. Describe flare patterns to be utilized at accident scenes.
  15. Describe how to interview witnesses at the scene.

Course Contents

  1. The safe misdemeanor and felony vehicle stops.
  2. Deal with violator contact and proper searching of vehicles.
  3. Recognition of/dealing with suspected persons driving under influence of alcohol or drugs.
  4. Issuance of citations and making an arrest.
  5. Ability to use the traffic template in developing speed and skid factors.
  6. Investigate and document a simulated accident approved by Washington State Parks.
  7. Measurement, recording and drawing of scaled diagrams.
  8. Proper procedures for photographing accident scenes.
  9. Proper procedures to manage an accident scene to protect visitors, property and evidence.
  10. Proper techniques to utilize when investigating accidents other than motor vehicles.
  11. Necessity for identifying, reporting and investigating those accidents that may evolve into Tort Claims against the State of Washington.
