 Course Description  

Continuation of FIRE 120. Introduction to firefighting tools and equipment and basic firefighting techniques in new firefighter skill sets. Cognitive and skills development in emergency ground operations using firefighting companies. Emphasizes working in companies. Meets some of the training requirements for Firefighter 1 certification and incrementally prepares the student for an eventual certification examination.


Prerequisite: FIRE 120 with minimum C grade or department chair approval.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify the types, care and uses of forcible entry tools.
  2. Describe safety measures employed when using forcible entry tools.
  3. Demonstrate proper forcible entry techniques through various structural membranes.
  4. Identify various types, components and uses of fire service ladders.
  5. Perform inspections of aluminum fire service ladders.
  6. Properly ladder various types of buildings in varying conditions.
  7. Demonstrate adequate skills while carrying, positioning, raising, climbing and working from ladders.
  8. Explain the purpose of property conservation and the importance of salvage and overhaul from a “customer service” standpoint.
  9. Perform different salvage cover throws, folds, and rolls after arranging a room’s contents into a salvageable position.
  10. Shut off a flowing sprinkler head.
  11. Explain where to search buildings for hidden fires and how to look for structural stability.
  12. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of ventilation.
  13. Demonstrate an understanding of the safety precautions to be taken during ventilation operations.
  14. Demonstrate an understanding of how to utilize various ventilation techniques, i.e. demonstrate ventilating techniques using hand and power equipment.
  15. Continue to learn how to function as a team in an environment requiring teamwork.
  16. Begin to communicate effectively with a diverse and multicultural population.
