Introduction to driving various types of fire apparatus in emergency and non-emergency modes. Meets academic and drill ground training requirements for Washington State Emergency Vehicle Accident Prevention certification. Valid driver's license required.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify applicable Washington State statutes and Washington State Administrative Codes and describe how they regulate operators of emergency vehicles.
2. Describe several types of driver failure, which contributes to accidents, and identify appropriate defensive tactics.
3. Given a set of driving circumstances, describe how velocity, centrifugal force, inertia, and friction affect emergency vehicle driving.
4. Given a set of driving circumstances, describe how acceleration, deceleration, turning, and weight transfer affect emergency vehicle driving.
5. Describe a procedure for estimating vehicle following distances.
6. Describe precautions to take when driving in adverse weather conditions.
7. Describe steps that should be taken in controlling any type of skid.
8. Describe problems associated with night driving and ways to improve visibility while driving at night.
9. Given an emergency vehicle and vicinity traffic, demonstrate precautions to be observed and the appropriate backing of emergency vehicles.
10. Given an emergency vehicle and vehicle inspection forms, correctly perform an after-use and periodic inspection.
11. Given an emergency vehicle and a driving course, demonstrate driving and maneuvering skills.
