Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knolwedge of safe boating practices.
  2. Tie basic knots used in small boating.
  3. Chart intended courses and speeds using true and magnetic headings.
  4. Calculate speed, distance or time run for D.R. purposes.
  5. Calculate tides and currents using tide and current tables.
  6. Demonstrate ability to operate a vessel up to 50 feet in length in close spaces in a safe and legal manner.

Course Contents

  1. Common boat types and their identifying characteristics.
  2. Equipment required by law and optional safety equipment.
  3. Theory of boat handling including "Rules of the Road."
  4. Basic navigation; mariners compass and course plotting; distance determination; speed calculations; charts; and aids to navigation.
  5. Basic seamanship including anchoring, docking and locking.
  6. Weather considerations and theory of sailing.
  7. Basic piloting using ranges and lines of bearing.
  8. On the water training in outboard, inboard/outdrive and inboard twin engine and inboard single engine using standard rudder control and directed thrust control.
