 Course Description  

Diagnosis and repair of automotive fuel delivery, carburetion, throttle body injection, port injection, and emission control systems, including computer controls and operation of diagnostic equipment.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisite or concurrent enrollment: AT 100 or 107, AT 121, 205, 212 and ENGL 170.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Understand fire and carbon monoxide hazards as well as general safety.
  2. Perform on-the-vehicle diagnosis and repair of fuel delivery systems.
  3. Properly utilize repair manuals and service information.
  4. Perform on-the-vehicle diagnosis and repair of emission control systems.
  5. Determine appropriate fuel and emission service by following a systematic diagnostic procedure.
  6. Understand 5-gas emission analysis, and be able to utilize this understanding to correctly diagnose and repair engine, ignition, and fuel systems.
  7. Perform on-the-vehicle diagnosis and repair of carburetors and their supporting systems.
  8. Perform system performance checks on throttle body and port injection systems and be able to diagnose and repair these systems.
  9. Repair all assemblies to manufacture's specifications of tolerances and fit.
  10. Demonstrate understanding of theory of operation of the following:
    • Fuel delivery systems; manual, electrical, and computer controlled.
    • The five tailpipe emissions: CO, HC, CO2, O2, NOX.
    • Emission control devices including: PCV, EGR, AIR, EVAP, and CAT. CONV.
    • Six circuits of the carburetor; and computer controlled carburetion.
    • Basic computer feedback - open loop/closed loop.
    • Throttle body injection; port fuel injection.
    • Forced induction systems.
