Speech

The speech program at Skagit Valley College seeks to foster cultural pluralism, critical thinking, and basic communication skills through collaborative and traditional courses, technological applications, and cross-cultural interaction.

Degrees And Certificates Information – Speech Emphasis

Currently, SVC does not have an official degree or certificate program specific to speech. However, those students who are interested in developing a speech emphasis in conjunction with seeking any AA degree may do so by selecting speech or speech-designated courses while fulfilling their elective and/or learning community requirements. Under certain circumstances, ATA students may work with faculty and others to construct an Individual Professional/Technical Certificate which may emphasize communication skills. The following examples illustrate how students may add an unofficial speech emphasis to an AAUCT (transfer) or ATA degree:

AAUCT student
Basic skills speech requirement 3-5 credits
Learning community w/ speech course 3-5 credits
Additional Arts distribution 3-9 credits
Electives 3-10 credits
TOTAL 12-29 credits

ATA student
Basic skills speech requirement 3 credits
SOSC credit 2 credits
Program requirement that emphasizes speech (such as BMT 141, 5 credits; BMT 170, 1-3 credits; BMT 180, 2 credits) 0-10 credits
Learning community w/ speech course 3-5 credits
Elective 0-5 credits
TOTAL 8-25 credits

To prepare for communication/speech majors at four-year transfer universities, students should consult individual college catalogs or advisors in the counseling center. SVC provides transfer guides for Western Washington University (WWU) and Washington State University (WSU) for students interested in obtaining speech degrees at these schools. See current transfer guides.
