Tutoring
Welcome to the SVC Tutoring Center
We're here to help students help themselves to achieve academic success. We are located in Lewis Hall, Room L-20. There are two main types of tutoring available on the Mount Vernon Campus.
-
One-on-one tutoring, where students meet regularly with a tutor over the course of the quarter is available to eligible students, along with other academic services, through the TRIO Student Support Services Program. To find out about eligibility and other services, check out their web page by Clicking Here.
-
Campus-wide tutoring, which includes a variety of tutoring options, is available free of charge to all students enrolled in classes here at SVC. Campus-wide services are described below:
Drop-in Tutoring
Tutors are available to assist students who need extra help with math. Drop-in math tutors can help with most levels - from basic math through calculus. You can drop by any time during scheduled hours. The drop-in tutors wear nametags and circulate around the room to help students as needed. Let the tutor know you would like some assistance. Drop-in tutoring may also be available in other subjects. Drop-in math tutoring schedules and information on current subjects being tutored are available in L-20, or Click Here.
Writing Tutoring
Tutors are available to help students with writing assignments in English 99, 101, and 103, as well as writing assignments in other courses. The writing tutors can give students feedback on any step of the writing process – brainstorming, outlines, rough drafts and revisions. Tutors won't proofread your papers, but will point out mistakes and help you learn how to identify and correct them. For best results, we suggest that students come in to get help early in the writing process. Students sign up in advance for a 25-minute session with a writing tutor; or you can stop by to see if there is an opening during the scheduled times. Sign-up sheets are located in L-20. Writing tutors wear nametags and you can look for the "Writing Tutor" sign on their table. For the current schedule come to L-20.
ESL Tutoring
English as a Second Language (ESL) tutors can help ESL students with their writing and other assignments. Students sign up in advance for a 30-minute tutoring session. ESL tutors can be identified by the "ESL Tutor" sign on their table. Sign-up sheets and schedules are available in L-20.
