WASHINGTON STATE NURSING CARE

QUALITY ASSURANCE COMMISSION

According to Washington State Law, RCW 43.830 and RCW 43.43.840, any student nurse with a positive criminal history for "crimes against persons" is not allowed to work in a nursing home.  Background checks of criminal history are also required by local area hospitals.   Because clinical experience in both acute care facilities and nursing homes is an integral part of the nursing curriculum, students with a positive history of "crimes against persons" will not be able to enroll in the Practical Nursing Program, Nursing 100, or the LPN to RN Program.  All nursing students must pass a criminal background check and drug screening before being accepted to the nursing program.

If a clinical facility determines that a student nurse may not do clinicals in the facility, the student will not be able to continue in the nursing program.

When you complete your nursing program you will be required to answer Yes or No to the following  questions on the application to Washington State Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission forms.  (P.O. Box 1099. Olympia. WA 98507-1099).  It is important for students to be aware of these questions before starting the program.  If you anticipate problems answering any of these questions, contact the commission at the address above.  Students may also go online for information at  http://www.doh.wa.gov/hsqa/Professions/Nursing/default.htm
