English 104 Learning Communities (10 credits) – ENGL 104 with one of the courses below:

This learning community explores the nature of research and writing as it is practiced in specific disciplines.  Students must enroll in one of the English 104C sections and the corresponding course listed below.

Fall 2013 Classes

Writing for College Success (7 credits) – ENGL 99 & CSS 100

Students will sharpen their writing skills as they learn the secrets of college success and explore their growth as students.  All students enrolled in CSS 100 must enroll in ENGL 99.

Writing with Psychology (10 credits) – ENGL& 101/PSYC& 100

Students practice their writing skills within the context of a general psychology class. Students must enroll in both courses.

Writing by the Book (6 credits) – ENGL& 101/READ 107

All students will read a book in common that is currently in the news. The course combination will sharpen reading and thinking skills while providing a forum for polishing college writing. READ 107 is taught online.

The Test of Time: Art and History in the Ancient World (10 credits) – ART 142 (D)/HIST& 116 (D)

Gods and goddesses, pharaohs and emperors, pyramids and painting! Explore the history of the ancient western world with a particular focus on the art created by those societies. Learn how our ideas of beauty, knowledge, justice, and government have their roots in the ancient past.

Writing from the Senses (6 credits) - ENGL 236&/PE 149

Through the practice of yoga, writing, and observation of the natural world, students will be encouraged to view health and creativity from different perspectives. These classes will be held alternately outdoors and in the classroom. Students will be encouraged to pay attention to the specified sense (for ex: hearing) in different outdoor environments. Then, they will write in response to their observations. Students will also read a variety of texts inspired by observation and study of the natural world.

Winter 2014 Classes

The Golden Door: Immigrant Voices in a New Land (D) (10 credits) – ENGL 254&/GEOG& 100

World Regional Geography and World Literature: This Learning Community wil l cover the cultural significance of immigration to America through the literary traditions of the immigrants and their geographic influences. It will explore the diversity of America through the culture, geography, and literature of America’s immigrants. Students will also use their own family’s origins to connect with the course’s content, including traditions and food.

Spring 2014 Classes

Knowing and Learning (5 credits) – PHIL 115/PSYC 115

This class is an interdisciplinary examination of how we know and learn. Using the tools of the biological sciences, psychology, and philosophy, students explore how the brain acquires and uses knowledge. As part of a pilot project, this 5 credit course gives full Learning Community credit. Students have the choice between: PSYC 115 which gives distribution credits in the Cultures OR PHIL 115 which gives distribution credit in the Arts.

You are Whom You Eat! (10 credits) – ANTH& 206/NUTR& 101

This learning community explores via an appetizing blend of food with culture, anthropology and nutrition combined to examine social, religious, political and environmental connections to people.
