Adult High School Diploma

What is the Adult High School Diploma?

It is an opportunity for people who do not have a high school diploma to obtain one by completing the necessary courses and credits through Skagit Valley College.

Who is eligible to participate in the Adult High School Diploma Program?

Any student 19 years or older may obtain a high school diploma through Skagit Valley College (SVC). Students under the age of 19 may enter this program with the specific recommendation of their high school counselor or principal.

SVC cannot issue a high school diploma to any student prior to the ordinary date of graduation of that student's graduating class. SVC will issue a letter, upon request, stating that a student has met all of the requirements for graduation and will be issued a diploma.

What does a person need to do to get started in the Adult High School Diploma Program?

  • Complete and submit an SVC "Application for Admission" form to the campus you wish to attend. You may obtain an application from any Admissions Office or on the SVC website at www.skagit.edu.
  • If you wish to attend the Mount Vernon campus of SVC, call 360.416.7654 to schedule an appointment with the Adult High School Diploma Program advisor.

    You will need to bring an official copy of your high school transcript in a sealed, unopened envelope to your appointment.   
  • If you wish to attend one of the campuses below, submit a transcript request to the last high school you attended to have an official transcript to be sent to the appropriate college office on the campus you wish to attend:

  • Contact the campus of your choice listed above for instructions on taking a placement exam, arranging an appointment with an Adult High School Diploma Program advisor, scheduling, and payment information.
  • Attend your appointment with the SVC Adult High School Diploma Program advisor to obtain an evaluation of credits and to schedule classes.
  • Register at the Registration Office and begin attendance when the quarter begins.

What is required to complete the Adult High School Diploma?

These courses may be taken during the day, at night, through distance education, or in combination.

I have been out of school for a long time. Will I feel out of place at Skagit Valley College?

No. The Adult High School Diploma Program, as well as other programs at SVC, serves student of all ages.

Is there any way to get something equivalent to a high school diploma by taking a test?

Yes. SVC is an official General Education Development Testing Center. If you are 19 or over (or between 16-18 years old with a High School Release Form) and pass a series of tests, you will be issued a Certificate of Educational Competency (GED).

I didn't even complete grade school. Is that a problem?

No. Skagit Valley College operates basic education courses at many locations through Skagit and Island counties that can provide help in preparing you for the GED or Adult High School Diploma.
