Steps for Applying to Running Start

  1. Step 1

    Student must submit the following three documents together to the SVC Admissions Office:

    Official High School Transcript (2.25 GPA or higher is required)
    SVC Application form.
    Information Release form
  2. Step 2

    COMPASS Placement Testing Appointment
    Mount Vernon Campus: call the Admissions Office at 360-416-7697 to schedule a test.

    Oak Harbor; South Whidbey; Friday Harbor:
    Make a COMPASS placement test appointment by calling:
    Whidbey Island Campus Student Services Office at 360-679-5319;
    South Whidbey Center at 360-341-2324; and
    San Juan Center at 360-378-3220.
  3. Step 3

    Take the COMPASS Test
    Student takes the complete COMPASS test (writing, reading and math skills) for placement.
  4. Step 4

    Meet with High School Counselor
    Student must see their high school counselor for advising and completion of the "Running Start Enrollment Verification Form". Be sure to get the form signed by both the parent and high school counselor. This must be done every quarter in order for Running Start students to register for classes at SVC.

    If the student is a Home School student, he/she must go to their local school district office or high school to get the "Running Start Enrollment Verification Form" signed. (This form is required every quarter) Home School students are also required to give SVC a copy of the "Intent to Home School" form which has been filed with the school district office. (This form is required once each year, at the beginning of the school year).
  5. Step 5

    Call to make SVC Advising & Registration Appointment
    Contact the Skagit Valley College campus or center that you would like to attend to make an appointment for advising and registration.

    Students attending the SVC Mount Vernon campus need to call the Admissions office to make an appointment for a SVC "New Student Group Advising and Registration Session". (360) 416-7697
    Students attending SVC in the following areas, call the corresponding number, to make an advising appointment:
    Oak Harbor - WIC Student Services Office at 360-679-5319;
    South Whidbey Center at 360-341-2324; and
    San Juan Center at 360-378-3220.

  6. Step 6

    Attend SVC New Student Advising Registration Appointment
    Student brings the completed "Running Start Enrollment Verification Form" with them to their New Student Advising and Registration Appointment/Session.


    Running Start students must register in person for all registration transactions.


  7. Step 7

    Attend Classes at SVC
    Student attends classes at the beginning of the quarter. All new students are invited to attend the New Student Orientation held at both Mount Vernon and Whidbey Island campus the week prior to the quarter.
