Here is an update on Professional Development activities available to you through Quality Matters for Spring and Summer terms 2014. If you are interested in attending any of these activities just contact me (Lee Ash) directly by email. Obtain prior approval from your Dean or WIC VP in order to receive Professional Development credit for any of these activities. The QM classes mentioned below are funded by SBCTC, and it is important that I enroll you in them. Just email me with the start date and name of the class you want.
Learn to use the QM Rubric: QM Rubrics Class (APPQMR): See course description here. This is the entry point for learning how to use the QM Rubric to improve your course design and to review the courses of other faculty. It is also the prerequisite for becoming a Peer Reviewer. Enrollment fees are covered by SVC and SBCTC. A $100 stipend is available for attending this class and applying the rubric to your course design. This course also qualifies for Professional Development credit.
These 2-week asynchronous online Rubric classes by QM are available every month. This class is appropriate for faculty and staff who will be using the Rubric to design/redesign their courses and to help others do the same. It also provides an inside look at a well-designed online course that meets the QM standards. Find the schedule here. Note the ‘sort’ button at the top of the schedule. Select APPQMR to see only the Rubrics classes. There is also a K-12 APPQMR course listed, but that one is not for us. Some of the open start dates are:

Note: A local APPQ online workshop will run for 3 weeks (May 1-20). It is facilitated by Kathy Bright at Olympic College, and Brandy Long at Cascadia CC.
Reminder: Do not register for this class online unless you intend to pay the registration fee yourself. Send me the start date you want, and I will register you through the SBCTC.
Qualify to be a Course Reviewer: Peer Reviewer Course (PRC): See course description here.
The Peer Reviewer Course is a 2-week asynchronous online class, and it is designed to prepare experienced online faculty to become Quality Matters Certified Peer Reviewers. The Peer Reviewer Course includes a review of Quality Matters, practice critiquing and writing helpful recommendations, and a Practice Review in which the participants are asked to review specific standards in an online course using a simulated online rubric tool. The prerequisite for this course is successful completion of the APPQMR course, online teaching experience within the last 18 months, and completion of the application and Memo of Understanding. See details at the Course Description link above. A $100 stipend is available for attending this class and being willing to review your peer’s courses at SVC. Have a course reviewed or serve as a course reviewer: The essence of Quality Matters is the peer review process. It is here you work with other faculty to improve the design of your course. Some preparation is needed to have a course reviewed, and the flowchart here gives the details. Let me or Barbara Moran know if you have any questions. Once you receive certification you can review courses at SVC as well as other colleges in Washington and across the nation. Become a QM Facilitator: We need more QM Certified Facilitators to train faculty here at SVC and at other colleges in Washington. Facilitators also have the opportunity to facilitate QM-sponsored training nation-wide. To become an Online or Face-to-Face Facilitator see the calendar at the links above.
1. OLE Faculty Support Site in Moodle: This eLearning support has many valuable resources for course design and presentation. Module 3 contains various Course Quality resources including those from QM. If you don’t currently have access to the site, just make a request to the CLT (email@example.com).
3. QM Mentors: Barbara Moran (Barbara.Moran@skagit.edu) and I are available for QM support on the MV and WIC campuses. Contact us by email for assistance or to set up a meeting. If you have questions about QM, course design, or QM training contact us. You can also contact any of our faculty and staff who have taken the QM training. So far 65 faculty and staff have completed the Rubrics class (APPQMR) and ten have become Certified Peer Reviewers (PRC).
4. CLT Training Sessions: Attend any of our CLT pizza and QM sessions this term to learn more. Check the CLT training calendar here. If your department or group would like a custom QM introduction or training just let Barbara or I know.
