SVC English Department

WHAT DO WE HAVE TO OFFER YOU?

The English Department offers courses that satisfy a variety of learning goals. Our courses help prepare transfer students for upper division work at four year colleges and universities, satisfy the requirements of several professional, technical and certificate programs, and provide an avenue of continual intellectual enrichment in the areas of Writing and Literature.

WHO ARE WE?

We are a group of dedicated teachers committed to helping students explore, understand and enjoy literature and writing. The overall goal of our teaching, research and other professional activities is to foster in our students expert skills in critical thinking, reading and writing across the disciplines, creative expression, logical analysis, and cultural perspectives. As a department, we embody a variety of styles and interests that help us to develop independent thinkers.

LEARNING COMMUNITIES & WRITING LINKS

Students pursing an AA-UCT degree in order to finish their studies at a four year school will take at least one of their required English composition courses linked to another course. These writing links provide the unique opportunity to develop writing skills in the context of a specific discipline. Linked classes also help students streamline their schedules and give them access to two instructors' feedback on their writing.

WRITING & LITERATURE PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

SVC administers the ASSET placement examination to determine appropriate placement in a writing course. Tests are scheduled through Counseling and Career Services. After taking the placement examination, students must check with an advisor or counselor before enrolling in a writing course.
