Ceremony Information

GRADUATION CEREMONY for Skagit Valley College – Whidbey Island Campus

READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS so you know the flow and what to do.

 

Information and reminders:

·         There is no limit to the number of people you can invite to graduation.  Tickets for admission are not required.

·         Children are welcomed at the ceremony, but for their safety and the consideration of other graduates and their guests, be sure they are in the care of an adult and are seated in the audience.

·         Smoking is not allowed on campus or inside buildings.

·         If one of your guests should need special seating or assistance because of a disability or physical restriction, contact Carol Funk at 679-5319 .

 

Caps/Gowns/Tassels

·         Remember to pick up your cap, gown and tassel from the Whidbey Island Campus Cardinal Bookstore.   Bookstore hours are Monday & Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  Bring your student or photo I.D.

·         Open cap and gown package to be sure all parts are included.  Hang them up to get out the wrinkles.

·         Wear Departmental and President's medals, honor cords and PTK stole & tassel (if applicable).

·         Caps are to be worn with the tassel on the RIGHT side.  The top of the cap should be horizontal on the top of your head, not angled toward the back.

 

Graduation Ceremony

Line-up at 2:30

 Procession starts at 3:30

 

Assembly Directions:

·         Pick up name cards.

 

·         Line up begins at 2:30 pm.  Student ushers will arrange graduates into two rows.  You will follow behind the faculty to march into the ceremony.

 

·         Line up immediately behind the person you wish to sit next to during the ceremony.

 

·         Keep your spacing even.  Don't hurry but also don't lag behind.

 

·         The PROCESSION STARTS exactly at 3:30 P.M.

 


Procession order and instructions:

·         Platform guests, faculty, and graduates walk in. 

·         Remain standing until the Vice President says, "You may be seated".

·         Welcome by Dr. Donahue, President's Address and college awards

·         Awarding of Diplomas: President and Vice President come forward. Board members come forward. Faculty & Staff Readers take their places.

1.        Ushers will go to the first front row and will signal for the entire row to stand.

 

2.        Graduates will present their name card to reader.  When your name is called, walk forward to Dr. Tollefson and Dr. Donahue to shake hands.

 

3.        Shake hands with the Trustees.  Shake with your right hand and receive the cover with your left hand.  Turn either to the left or right (depending on which side you are sitting) then exit to your seat.

 

4.        Next, proceed back to your row.  Ushers will move to the next row.

 

5.        After the last person gets their diploma, WAIT for the President to say, "You have all the rights and honors…" then the Student Representative will return to the microphone and ask that "ALL GRADUATES STAND".

 

·         Student Rep. will announce, "I would like to present the Class of ....".  Graduates move their tassels from right to left.  You can cheer now!

 

·         Dr. Donahue will say, "This concludes our ceremony" and the music starts.

 

·         Platform guests will exit their seats first, then faculty, then graduates.  Faculty will line up on both sides to form an aisle and the graduates will pass between them to exit the gym first.  DO NOT STOP until fully out of the building into the courtyard. 

 

The reception will be in the adjacent Campus Center (Bldg C) immediately following the ceremony.  Take this opportunity to introduce your family and friends to your fellow students, staff and faculty.  CONGRATULATIONS!

 

Michael's/Vail Studio

·         Professional graduation photographs will be available after the ceremony (approx. 4:30 pm) in the student center. 

·         Variable package choices – see enclosed list.   Payment is due at time of order (check, cash or credit card - add $1 for credit card charges).

·         Packages will be ready within 2 weeks and pick up is at Michael's/Vail Studio in Oak Harbor.
