Baseball
It is game day today! The Cardinal Baseball team will be hosting the Western Washington University Club Baseball team tonight at 6PM. Tonight's game is a non-league contest and is scheduled for 9 innings.
The Cardinal Baseball team has moved up in the rankings lately as well. In the conference rankings Skagit is now sitting at #2, just behind Lower Columbia, who the team split games with in the pre-season. In the Western regional rankings Skagit is up to #6 in the ABCA Pacific Division Poll (WA, OR, CA). The Cardinals are 15-4 overall and 3-1 in league play.
Skagit has a number of players near the top in NWAACC statistical categories as well. Jeff Calhoon has a .500 batting average, Austin Potter and Andy Chriscaden are hitting .393 and .392 respectively, Chriscaden is leading the team with 19 runs batted in, and Travis Shreve and Ryan Moore have stolen 12 bases each thus far. In the pitching categories, Jim Reed is leading the conference with 5 saves and is near the top with a 0.96 earned run average, and Brandon Andreini has a conference leading 5 wins as well.
Skagit will host Shoreline on Saturday at 1PM as the team returns to league play after a bye last weekend.
Tennis
The Women's Tennis team is off to a 3-0 start , and freshman Lindsey Newman has yet to lose a game in her matches this season. The Men's team is 1-1 with Daniel Redfern leading the charge.
Both teams will host matches Saturday and Sunday on the recently re-opened Joan Armstrong Tennis Courts.
Softball
The softball team is 1-3 in league play with a couple of tough losses on the road.
Skagit will host Everett tomorrow afternoon in a rain re-scheduled match-up, and will then travel to Yakima this weekend for an NWAACC Crossover tournament with 22 other conference teams.
Golf
The golf teams opened up their spring season last weekend at Wenatchee. The men finished 3rd in the tournament and Phil Reedy finished 3rd overall with a two-day total of 138, just 3 strokes behind the winner. In the women's tournament Skagit finished 3rd as well, and Amy Thomas finished 8th with a two-day total of 169.
The golf teams will travel to Spokane next weekend.
Track
Skagit had runners competing in the 9-team Ralph Vernacchia Invitational at Western Washington University. Skagit Valley was one of only two community colleges represented. All other schools were NCAA Division 2 schools.
Logan Johnson finished 5th in the 400 meters with a time of 50.42, 5th in the 200 meters with a time of 23.27, and 10th in the 100 meters with a time of 11.71.
Heather Grambo finished 20th overall in the 800 meters with a time 2:35.66
The runners will compete again next Friday in the Western Washington University Twilight Meet.
Tullis Taken In The 8th Round Of The MLB Draft
Freshman pitcher Braden Tullis was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 8th Round of the Major League Baseball. Tullis is from Boise, Idaho and had a record of 9-2 with a 1.56 ERA and 59 strikeouts for the Cardinal baseball team this year. Tullis was the Northern Region MVP and Gold Glove Selection, and was a First-Team All NWAACC Selection as well.
Ryan Verdugo Selected In The 9th Round Of The MLB Draft
Former Skagit Valley College Baseball Player Ryan Verdugo was selected today in the 9th round of the MLB draft by the San Francisco Giants. Verdugo, a left-handed pitcher, played for Skagit Valley College during the 2006 and 2007 seasons. Following the 2007 season Ryan was named the Skagit Valley College Male Athlete of the Year; an award that considers athletic achievement, character, and academic succes. Following his career at SVC Ryan was selected in the 47th round by San Francisco but chose to accept a scholarship to play at Louisiana State University. Verdugo is currently leading the Tigers in innings pitched and ERA and will be the opening game starter for LSU this weekend in the NCAA SuperRegionals against the University of California at Irvine. The winner of the 3 game series, being played at LSU, will advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
Newman and Harty named 07/08 Athletes of the Year
Sophomores Caitie Newman and Ben Harty were named the Skagit Valley College Athletes of the Year for the 2007/08 School Year. Newman was a 3 sport athlete; competing in basketball, volleyball and tennis; and Harty was a 2 year starter for the Cardinal Baseball team. The selections were announced at last nights annual All Sport Banquet held in McIntyre Hall on the Mt. Vernon campus of Skagit Valley College.
