Parks Services & Protection ATA Degree
The Parks Services and Protection degree prepares students for careers in visitor and resources operation and protection, and emergency services in natural resource recreation areas in the United States, lands and facilities that are owned, developed, administered and/or operated at all levels of government (including tribal) and private industry. This emphasis area provides an academic background that facilitates entry into the parks and recreation/tourism industry, and also encourages growth and advancement in the disciplines of park, recreation and wildlife enforcement.
Park directors advise that they need entry-level staff familiar with operation fundamentals, risk management principles, and basic trouble-shooting and repair knowledge of park infrastructure. Park amenities, utility systems, recreational fields and play equipment, vehicles and equipment associated with recreational use need maintenance, repair and ongoing examination. They further suggest skills in field and turf care, landscaping, basic arbor care, and a working knowledge of interpretation as it relates to natural and cultural resources, and Pacific Northwest history. Finally, practical people skills for the recreational workplace, including skill development in visitor protection, crowd management, security of assets, supervision of employees, etc., are strongly recommended.
