Whidbey Island Campus My Math Lab

Getting started

MyMathLab Terminology and information page:

MyMathLab (mml): This is web-based software that is textbook specific and accompanies Addison-Wesley and Prentice Hall textbooks in mathematics and statistics.  This software offers a variety of invaluable resources, including, but not limited to:

  • online homework assignments
  • online exams
  • complete online course content and customization tools
  • guided mathematical instruction
  • multimedia learning aids
  • student study plan
  • free tutoring from the Math Tutor Center

Over one million students have improved their mathematics skills with MyMathLab's dependable and easy-to-use online homework, guided solutions, multimedia, tests, and e-Books.

Check http://info.coursecompass.com/website/support.html#sysreq to determine if your system meets the minimum requirements.

The use of mml requires an access code and a CourseID (see below).

Access code:  This gives you the ability to access all of the features provided by mml through the CourseCompass site.  The access code (if purchased in a textbook package or individually through the college's bookstore) comes in an access kit (cardboard folder).

The access code can be purchased in a variety of ways – as part of a textbook package or individually (not part of a textbook package).

Included in a Textbook package:

  • Classes requiring the use of mml have their new textbooks bundled with the mml Access kit (includes code).  This bundling is done at no additional cost (the new textbook would cost the same with or without the mml access kit).

Cautionary note:

    • As mistakes can be made during the textbook ordering/requisition phases, be sure to check to see if the new textbook does include the access kit before purchasing the textbook.
    • Vendors other than the Cardinal Bookstore will most likely NOT include the access kit with the new text.

Purchased Separately (not packaged with a textbook):

  • The mml access kit may be purchased at the Cardinal Bookstore

OR

  • You may purchase the access kit directly from the publisher (www.coursecompass.com).  This option is approximately $10 less expensive than buying it through the bookstore and has the advantage of automatically enrolling you in the class.  When you purchase the code online you will need the courseID (see below).

CourseID:  The courseID is what differentiates a math 98 class taught by Jeff Stady from a math 98 class taught by Jim McCleery, for example.  When an instructor sets up a class they are given a courseID.  In order for a student to get into a class, each instructor must give this courseID to their students.  Some instructors do this before the first day of the quarter, others will do it on the first day.  It is best to check with your instructor for specifics regarding the courseID.

Course Compass: If myMathLab (mml) is required in your class (see list INSERT LINK), CourseCompass is the site that "hosts" your class.  This is the site through which you will access all of the features offered by mml.  The courseID (see above) provided to you by your instructor will give you access to this website.

If you have used Blackboard, you will be able to use the CourseCompass site since the two are very similar.

eBook: Through the mml access code, and embedded into your class' CourseCompass site, is an electronic version of your textbook, or an e-book.  This e-book is identical to your textbook.

The advantages to the e-book are:

  • Cost – for the purchase price of the access code (approx. $45), you have the textbook online.  A new traditional textbook will cost approximately $110.
  • Embedded links: throughout the online book there are links taking you to videos, sample problems and homework exercises.
  • Wherever you can access the internet, you can access your textbook.

The disadvantages of the e-book are:

  • If you are using the e-book for an on-site (traditional) class, remember you will only have it with you using a computer.
  • Will need to read from the computer screen (unless you print the book).

How do I purchase the MyMathLab access kit?

MyMathLab access kits may be purchased in the following ways:

1. Part of a textbook bundle: When you purchase your new math textbook at Skagit Valley College's Cardinal Bookstore, many of the books include the MyMathLab access kit (includes code).  HOWEVER - double check to make sure that the textbook package does include it - not all instructors use MyMathLab and as a result textbooks in those classes may not include the MyMathLab access kit.

2. Separately - not packaged with a textbook: This option is best for people buying either
      a. a used textbook that was not packaged with MyMathLab
OR
      b.
a used or new book online
OR
      c
. not using a book - only using the online "ebook" provided by using MyMathLab.

If you are using one of these options, you can purchase your MyMathLab access kit at the Cardinal bookstore OR you can purchase it online at www.coursecompass.com.  As a note to students, it is less expensive to purchase it online at www.coursecompass.com.
