Head Coach Kevin Matthews is entering his fifth season at the helm of the Skagit Valley Cardinals; with a record of 114-52 over the previous four seasons. He has also been named NWAACC Northern Division Coach of the Year by his peers in 2 of his 4 seasons at Skagit. Coach Matthews came to Skagit from Lewis-Clark State College where he most recently served as pitching coach from 2001-02; this included the 2002 NAIA National Championship season. Matthews served two prior stints as pitching coach at LC State as well. During his time in Lewiston he coached under ABCA Hall of Fame Member and current Warrior Head Coach Ed Cheff.

Coach Matthews played for Davis High School as well as the Yakima Beetles Legion team that appeared in the 1976 Legion World Series. His pitching record with the Beetles from 1976-77 was 27-2 and still stands as the best two-year record for any Beetles pitcher. Following graduation Matthews played baseball at Yakima Valley Community College where he was a starting pitcher for the 1978 NWAACC Championship team. He then transferred to LC State and appeared in the 1979, 80', and 82 NAIA World Series'. He was named the LC State Pitcher of the year in 1979 with a record of 9-2. Matthews earned All-Region honors in 1980 and 82' and finished his LC State career with a record of 26-8 and graduated with a B.S. in Physical Education in 1983.

Coach Matthews coaching resume' also includes the Head Coach of the Lewis-Clark Twins American Legion Squad from 1997-2000. In 2000 the twins were the Idaho State Champs and finished 3rd in Regionals. Most recently he served as pitching coach during the summer of 2006 for the Skagit Eagles of the Pacific International League. In addition, Coach Matthews was a member of the coaching staff for the Team USA representative in the bi-annual Harlem Honkbal International Baseball Tournament in the Netherlands during the summer of 2006. This team was comprised of NWAACC All-Stars, including 4 current and former Skagit Valley Cardinals.

Coach Matthews lives in Anacortes, WA with his wife Kristi and daughters Jaci (18), and Jordyn (11). Daughter Lindsey (21) attends Lewis-Clark State University where she is pursuing a degree in education.
