Watersheds can be viewed on several temporal and spatial scales. Small spatial scales such as rock, twig, or leaf should be viewed on a similar small temporal scale of 100 - 10-1 year.

The watershed should be organized in a hierarchical format allowing examination and management of watersheds on appropriate scales.
