Community Service Candidates

Quan Vu (Rio)

Hi! My name is Quan Vu, but I go by Rio. I am an international student from Vietnam, and I have been here since last summer. I am a friendly and happy person; however, I used to be a quiet and shy person, so that is why I understand feelings of students, especially the new students. Before fall quarter, I worked as a peer mentor and driving assistant to help new international students. The few experiences that I have had make me realize that I love working with and for students.

I am running for Community Service Representative in student government because this is the most effective way that I can make contact with students. With this position, I will have more chances to work for students. I feel that we do not have enough events for students. Students need more activities where they can relax and enjoy happiness after classes; also, they can improve their skills such as communication, co-operation, or breaking the ice with new people through the activities.

In addition, we, the government, should improve relation between us and students. Many students really need our help, but only a few seek help. New students are often embarrassed, or maybe they do not know what or where to ask. Therefore, we should not wait for their questions; we need to encourage them to express their opinions, or at least we must have a way that students can easily contact us.

I am taking on a flexible schedule this quarter, and I will have lots of time to dedicate to the students. I will put my time and effort into making SVC a better place for students.

Keon Yeun

Hello everyone, my name is Keon and I am running for the position of the community service representative.

For me, I have been an active person helping out the community. I participated in community service for over 30 hours throughout my whole high school life.As a member of Key Club, which is an international high school community service club, I had organized a several community service project with my team. My role was to contact the person in charge for a nursing home and made appointment of visiting. I am experienced in organizing community services and I believe that I can handle this position well.

If I became your community service representative, my goal is to promote community services throughout the whole campus. And let our fellow schoolmates know where the volunteering opportunities are. Meanwhile, volunteering experiences always look good on your resume: you will become a better candidate when you transfer to another university by having more community service hours than the others. Simply by volunteering, we can contribute to our community simply by volunteering.

To raise our awareness to our community, I would set up workshops. For instance, I would set a handicraft workshop. To help people in needs, students can make handicrafts and then we can raise funds by selling them. Having such a workshop is already a great volunteering opportunity contributing to our society.

I am a well-organized person with great time management skills. I used to be active in four different clubs in high school and took AP Calculus class and College Chemistry class at the same time. I could still get a level 5 for my AP test and got a good grade for my college chem class. I managed my time effectively by getting things organized and not procrastinating. Hence, I believe I can manage my time well between schoolwork and serving my fellow schoolmates.

Vote for me! It would be my pleasure to serve you! Here is m y promise to you: I take actions to do what I said I want to do.

Gavin Murray

My name is Gavin Murray and I would like to run for Community service representative. I've had many service experiences in the last few years. If elected I'd hope to accomplish good things, in a timely and complete fashion.  I can spend my time wisely to devote myself to the services required of me.

Service and me go way back, our church does community service projects all the time. I am also in my high school's honors society. For those of you who have attended Anacortes High School, you know that to be in honors society you must do 20 hours of service each year. My biggest service project I've done was my Eagle Scout project. For those of you who aren't familiar with boy scouts, the Eagle award is the highest rank one can achieve. It also involves tedious hours of paper work and even more hours of a service project wholly conducted by myself. So yes I know what it means to give service and how to get things done.

In this position I'd aspire to perform service projects both big and small. Small projects like trash pick-ups, or sweeping the sidewalks, or doing things for the community outside of campus. There will be big projects as well, such as rerouting the pipes for all the drinking fountains so they pumped Kool-Aid, or building a new sky parking lot right above the cardinal center! Just kidding, I wouldn't be allowed to do those things, but hey it's the thought that counts.

All the projects I'll actually do, will be done in a timely manner. Not only will they be done fast, but they'll also be done thoroughly, unalloyed.

I grew up with a huge sense of practicality in my life. My dad always does things as fast and effective as possible. He taught me how important it is to not waste time. As a result, I don't waste much of my time these days; in part of us not having a TV, and Internet time is limited. I'm taking 16 credits this quarter, I'm not in any clubs, and I have a very easy non-time consuming job that will allow me to turn my attention to this capacity whenever needed

Hannah Voss

My name is Hannah Voss, and I am running for the Community Service Representative for the Mount Vernon Campus of Skagit Valley Community College.

When I was younger, I was involved with a volunteer program that was run through the Skagit Country Parks and Recreation Center. I am also connected with the Skagit County Community Action Agency in Mount Vernon. With that connection, I'm constantly updated via e-mail and corresponding with Susan Rowe about upcoming events that need volunteers, They also help me stay involved with the events that I can participate in, such as fundraising for breast cancer research. I work at Safeway; they do a lot of fundraising and also have many volunteer opportunities.

Many of my fellow students were not informed that there was a Community Service Representative on campus. I want to change that by helping students become involved in our community. I am also involved with the Rainbow Alliance. There, we organize community service projects. As Community Service Representative, I'd like to involve other clubs in community service. Not only can I assist in spreading the word about projects under way in need of volunteers, but I can also propose and organize events helping the community as well as our campus. I want to work together with my fellow students in making Skagit Valley College a more resourceful and economically friendly environment through volunteer work. Not only does this aid in job and college resumes, but it enriches the person involved in volunteer activities. To have a more involved student body would mean that our students would work more closely together; they would be able to network together and also get to know one another through experience. My ultimate goal is to better the student body via community action.

Since I already have connections with the Skagit County Community Action Agency, it will be easy to publicize events in our community that are already organized. I plan on working with the rest of ASSVC to brain-storm community service projects for our campus. I'm also running for Publicity Officer of the Rainbow Alliance. In already participating in creating public announcements for the Rainbow Alliance, including our community service projects, I'll be able to invite other students to participate. Publicity will motivate other students to become active in community service opportunities on and off campus. I'm also hoping to become affiliated with AmeriCore, which is a nationwide volunteer program that I'd like students to become informed of. Their organization offers scholarships and grants for participants, which will also motivate students completing a transfer degree to become involved.

Sustainability Candidates

Minjoo Kim

I have an experience as a block representative in my former college, Assumption College. I learned the importance of communication between students and all faculty members and staffs. I would do my best to be a reliable and sustainable bridge between different groups of people in needs. I also have an experience of joining different volunteering programs. I wish this would help me to build up social awareness and drives me to offer service to the society I belong to.

As a Sustainability representative, I would want SVC students to have a stronger and better understanding of our society and environment and to let them get involved in different activities to improve them.

I would encourage students to join different volunteering programs according to their interests and availability. I would also look for ways to give and let them understand the importance of keeping our environment clean and become environment friendly people.

Ticika Dominick

Environmental and sustainability awareness is a topic that I have been interested in throughout my entire time at Skagit Valley College. I am currently a Biology major who plans to go into this field at a later point in my life. I believe that my passion for the subject, paired with the education I am receiving, and the relationship I have with the staff involved will help spread awareness and promote even more change that has already begun to bud at our beautiful campus.

I plan to push the boundaries of what has been previously thought possible in the minds of students and teachers alike by communicating openly with both parties. Angst Hall was only the beginning of a revolution. With more buildings and changes being made, we need a serious, responsible, and passionate individual to voice the concerns of environmental-friendly students and staff. Most of all, we need someone to speak for that which can't speak for itself – our environment.

I am here to fill that position. I hope to connect with those who have concerns regarding environmental and sustainability issues at SVC, and administrators to bring observable change to our practices and education. By collaborating together, I strongly and sincerely believe we can make SVC a better place for students, staff, and the community around us.

Instructional Issues Candidate

Brittany Wilson

I am in my freshman year at SVC and I am very impressed with the experiences I have had so far. I would like to have the opportunity to be involved in student government so that I can work with the students and staff to help others have a great experience also. I feel that being the Instructional Issues Representative would allow me to have a constructive way to build a bridge to fill the gap between students and faculty. My experience as captains of several sports teams provides me with leadership experience while my rigorous AP class schedule in high school gives me respect for academics. I feel these two experiences will allow me to be successful and make a difference in student government. If elected to this position, my goal would be to listen to the students concerns, get them to the appropriate faculty and help make decisions that solve these concerns. I will make myself available to students in any way possible and I promise to keep an open mind to be aware of different opinions and needs. Knowing that I wanted to be involved in student government, I set my schedule up to allow me time to be able to participate and give my all to this position. Due to my past academic and athletic schedule, I was not able to participate in student government as much as I would have liked to. I look forward to the opportunity to become involved to help make a difference for the students and staff at Skagit Valley College.

Jayne Haney

My name is Jayne Haney, and this is my second quarter at Skagit Valley College, and I am running for the Instructional Issues representative. I have had experience in my high school in Texas as a leader as debate captain and section leader. I am young enough to understand and appreciate the opinions of those going to college for the first time at SVC, and I am mature enough because of my experience living away from my family and living in Washington without their support to be considerate of the non-traditional students who are dealing with other issues in their lives.

I would like to, if possible, discover what classes are not offered that  if offered  the student body would benefit from, be that a class offered this quarter also offered as an evening class or classes the college doesn't offer that would be mutually beneficial for the students and the school. I would also like to find problems with the classes currently offered: are the classrooms conducive to a learning environment, are the teachers able to help every student individually, do the learning communities mesh well, etc. Once the relevant issues have been established, I hope to present them to the staff of the college, who can either approve or deny the classes put forth.

I am not overburdened by commitments or obligations, or I would not be running for this office, so time is not an issue when it comes to devoting myself to being the Instructional Issues Representative. I will devote my time and effort to being a good representative, and try my best to be a representative for the whole student body, not just myself; time and effort will also be given to listening to the issues that matter to those students who present them to me.

As a student in this college, I will see firsthand some of the issues, and they will affect me as well as the rest of the student body, and when I don't see the issues, I will definitely listen to those who do.  I would, in all honesty, like to do exactly what the description of my office states: be a representative of the students for instructional issues. I want to be your voice, if you'll let me.

Representative at Large Candidate

Ammon Kaopau

Hello, my name is Ammon Kaopua and I am a full-time student at Skagit Valley College- Mount Vernon Campus beginning my fourth semester.  I attended Burlington-Edison High School in Burlington, Washington and a where I have lived for the past five years.

Running for Representative at Large is an even lager responsibility that I am fully capable of preforming.  I have previously taken many leadership classes both in and out of school.  Aside from achieving the status of Life Scout, I have preformed in two previous student governments.  As an student government member,  I will act as a representative for the college in all things assigned to me by the council.  This can include anything from community service, to technical issues, to campus maintenance as well as to the students.  Basically, if you would like to have anything brought up before the council, I am your man.  This is convenient for all of us as I am nearly always on campus, and very friendly and approachable.

I know from experience what it is like to have students who are not very approachable as council members.  I would love to hear any questions, comments, or concerns, and promise to address them to the  best of my ability.  I will be setting up office hours where students can come and talk to to me about anything on campus.

Fellow Students, I look forward to serving you to the fullest extent of my abilities as your Representative at Large for the 2011-2012 school year.
