SVC Student Government Election Speeches - Introduction

MV Vice President

Brandi Benner

As a freshman at Skagit College I feel honored and blessed to be given this opportunity to apply for a student government position. I work exceedingly hard academically and in extracurricular activities for our school. My cumulative GPA is currently a 4.0 and I intend to keep it that way until I graduate from Skagit. I strive to be the best I can be in both the classroom setting and in athletics. At this time I am involved in basketball and tennis at the college and I plan on continuing my sports career after Skagit.

I am running for the vice president position because I feel as though this is one part of the student government that I can relate to the most. All four years of high school I was involved in the Future Business Leaders of America club (FBLA) as well as the Lynden Lions club. During these four years of being an active member, I learned a great deal of leadership, teamwork, and time management. Not only did I manage to participate in two clubs but I also was involved in three sports all four years of high school. One of the most important characteristics that I will carry on from my high school experience is commitment. Being committed to my teammates and club members is a quality that will remain with me for a lifetime. Commitment is not something that can be taught.  Never missing, or being late to a single practice, game, or meeting is something I take pride in and feel is vital to a successful team or organization. I have also learned through many volunteer activities, club meetings, and sports that attiude is often the only difference between success and failure. Starting next year I will also be a member of the Phi Theta Kappa which involves maintaining a high GPA and participating in activities around campus.

As a vice president I would like to ensure the students of Skagit to feel the need to come and talk to us about any miscommunication or uncertainty. As soon as we hear about the conflict or situation the faster it will be resolved. As a vice president I will oversee the performance of the representatives to make sure they are fulfilling the needs of the student body as well. I also feel that it is very important that all the clubs get an appropriate amount of funding each year. This will include all sports related activities as well. Of course all clubs and sports teams can find a way to raise money on their own if they need more money. I want club members to be able to come and speak with me about any problem or conflict.

I will put in as much time for this position as possible. Although I will be participating in basketball, and tennis, I am going to try my best to be of great help to the student body. I have learned to manage my time effectively all through high school and my first year at Skagit while maintaining a high GPA and being committed to the sports teams, so you can guarantee that I will do the same as part of the student government. I intend to be at all the meetings on Tuesdays as well as putting in as many office hours as necessary. Thank you for considering me as a candidate for your vice president.

Milos Pesic

As a VP I will demonstrate my leadership skills to provide our campus with balance of legislative duties and fun and contributing events at the campus.

I will be here to represent your voice and make sure it gets heard. I anticipate upcoming year to be rewarding as a product of this year's student government work. We will work on providing community service projects, school based events and strong government members who will be there to support your voice and your issues.

As Community Service Rep. this year I served to keep SVC a good community by organizing events that would bring students together. Remember the Dodgeball tournament just recently at which we had over hundred students kicking it off. I hope to keep this event as a quarterly vent for our school frustrations.

My leadership skills started building in high school where I was on student council for Belgrade City Parliament. Year later I was chosen by State Department to commit one year to study in US where I shared the culture and experience the differences. I developed a sense of civic responsibility and commitment to community. My time was filled with extracurricular activities, community service and attending leadership seminars and meetings with organization CIEE organization (Council of International Education Exchange).

MV Campus Treasurer

Angela (Kawai) Chan

This is Angela Kawai Chan who applying for student government as a treasurer. I am an international student, had been an exchange student for half a year in Tennessee. Back in Hong Kong, I was involved in couple clubs in school,
1. For foreign language club, as a secretary.
2. For community youth club, as treasurer, vice chairman.
3. For math society, as a committee member.
4. For graduation committee, I am in charge of the graduation budget.

For outside school, I am a venture scout, and in our scout group, I had been a treasurer for two years, till I left for overseas further study.

Involving in these activities provided me a lot of chances for leadership training, all kinds of experience. Being trusted to take care of a huge sum of money, and to advise the group not to over spent, I learnt to communicate with different type of people which makes me ready for the post of Mount Vernon campus treasurer.

Being a treasurer, from the past experience, keeping a good eye on our balance, avoid any over spent is what a good treasurer should do. I would love to meet these requirements. Also I wish I am able to carry couple activity duty while I am in the office, to explore more on college.

As a full time international student, I am taking 15 credits, but compare to the work load I used to have in Hong Kong, I am more than able to handle this post. Apart from class, I am working with my math study group, cooking for two of my friends. And I am still able to have fun and enjoying my "not so busy" life in Mount Vernon. If you know me, you will know that I am always bored, and always ready to give someone a hand.

Shinwoo Kim

I'm the president of Skagit Valley dance club now. Usually, I planed how we going to use our budget and how we going to prepare the upcoming performance. I realized that the position such as a president of club required a strong responsibility and leadership. So, I'm trying to become a good president who has a strong responsibility and leadership. If I join the student government, I think my current position will help me whatever I do.

My major is business and I'm interested in accounting.  If I become a MV campus treasurer, I can experience actual accounting not from the text book. Also, I can make more personal connections if I join the student government. So, it will be good experience for me.

If I join the student government, I'll do my job responsibly as a member of student government.

If I join the student government and become a MV campus treasurer, I will not absent any meetings and do my best every time.

Alaana Steele

As Mount Vernon Campus Treasurer, I hope to fairly distribute Skagit Valley College funds to programs and clubs during legislative board budget meetings. I want to provide financial aid to clubs and programs that not only need financial aid, but also deserve financial aid.

A prime reason why people enroll into Skagit Valley College is because the school tuition is practical for exceptional educational courses. Athletics is another prime reason why SVC attracts so many students. I for one was very much attracted to Skagit Valley College because they offered a cross-country/track running program unlike Whatcom. However, a lot of the athletic programs at Skagit require funds that go to dispensable clubs and programs during seasonal budget meetings. I hope to change this by fairly designating budgets to clubs and programs based on the level of vitality and actual needs. Athletic programs are constantly fund-raising to meet their needs, yet they are the programs that provide Skagit Valley College with huge success and an attractive
reputation.

As treasurer, I also hope to dedicate my time outside of board meetings. I have much desire to interact with student life and introduce ideas that will not only improve the college's social activity, but also earn income. Throughout my life, I have always been creative as well as logical. As a former high school cross-country captain at Sehome, I have organized many team events and fundraisers such as car-washes, food vending, and the advertisement of team shirts I individually silk screened. A position on SVC's student government would allow me to express my creativity as well as logic.

Club Relations and Communications Representative

Susanne Danielson

The reason I applied for the position of Club Relations and Communications Representative is because I believe that clubs are an important part of the college experience. I, personally, have been a member of the Calling All Colors club for almost 2 years and it has shown me that there is so much more you can accomplish while in college, like helping your community and gaining leadership experience. As for my experience for this position, I have taken a leadership in business class and I am the current club leader for Calling All Colors. What I hope to accomplish is to increase communication between clubs and the student body and also other clubs. Each club has activities that members of other clubs may be interested in but never hear about, such as fundraisers and volunteer opportunities. One way I hope to accomplish this is by meeting with club leaders and asking what they would like the other clubs to know, which may seem insignificant but could have a big impact on activities with too few participants. Throughout my years at Skagit Valley College, I've learned how to effectively manage my time, and should I earn this position, I would continue to do so.

Ngoc Hon Nguyen

My name is Ngoc Nguyen, I am from Hanoi, Vietnam. I have been  living  in America for almost 2 years, and this is my 3rd quarter attending SVC. Before attending SVC, I was an exchange student in Utah, and  it was an awesome experience for me. When I first came to US, I was afraid of everything because it is my first time lived in a new place without parents or relative beside. However, everything became better when I made friend with many kids in high school, I started having fun and joining many clubs over there, for instance: chess club, math club, science fiction club, multiple culture club.  We gathered together to help each other, make friends and create events, so that the club become more interesting. From these experiences, I believe I can be a good club relations and communication representative. Moreover, I am an outgoing talkative and creative person; thus, there is no reason that I cannot do a good job in this area. Plus, as like everybody know, a student government is not also good at activity, but also need to be diligent in studying.  Studying hard can help me to get success in transferring to a good university, and I want to accomplish this goal no matter what. Even though my schedule is busy, I always know how to make things in order by making a time table; therefore, I always can complete my studying, and also still have time to hang out with friends. So, it is not hard to manage to dedicate the time necessary to serve in this position. Finally, if I can become a government student, I can easily make students get along with each other more, and be more open, and also I want to help people whenever they need me.

Liya Rubio

I have many experience in this filed because while attending Port Townsend High School I was in many clubs. I was the vice-president of Key Club and class vice-president in ASB. I got many experience in talking in front of people. While attending Skagit Valley College I was in the Calling All Colors Club and I have joined Phi Theta Kappa. I think because of being in clubs it would be easy for me to talk and get to know each club.

I would really like to get to know each club and make others see the success and joy each club brings. I would like to help each club in anyway. I would want to attend at least one programs or fundraising each club does.
The first step to success is trying so in order to accomplish my goals. I will try my best in everything I do. I will make sure to attend every meeting so I don't miss anything. I will make sure to respect each club leader and make sure to listen to what they have to say.

I will have a calendar so I can manage my other needs like school. I will make all the time it needs in order for me to do a good job.

I will try my best to improve the transportation issue and accept all the voices from students. As we all know, student government is an important program for students and the college. Therefore, I will take my position very seriously and try to get the balance between my education and this job. For instance, I will attend to every single meeting and spend at least two hours every week to work on the things that I suppose to. Community Service Representative

Tyler Murphy

Hello, My name is Tyler Murphy, and I am running for Community Service Representative. Last year, I was highly active in Student Government here at SVC serving as your Vice-President. During which, I chaired weekly ASSVC Legislative meetings and I've served on several committees where I've had the opportunity to expressing student concerns. I am very familiar with the way Student Government functions.

If I am elected in the upcoming year as your Community Service Representative, I would like to increase Skagit Valley College's participation in our community by building relationships with existing and future businesses. Skagit Valley College is in a unique situation due the partnerships we already have with local high schools, and community centers. It would be an honor to only further those relationships.

Student Services Issues Representative

Rita (Ming Wai) Choi

Hello everyone! My name is Ming Wai Choi (Rita), an international student from Hong Kong. I have been here since the fall quarter of 2008. I am the Student Government Representative of this year. Today, I am running for the position in the Student Government again, which is Student Services Issues Representative.

When I in my Hong Kong high school, I was class representative of my school student government. And my job is response students' opinion to school. In this job and position, I understood the communication between all the person-in-charge, teachers and students opinions. Therefore, I know that interaction between the students, the advisors, the principles and representatives from public organizations is very essential in providing adequate and excellent services and activities to the students.

If I am successful in becoming the Student Services Issues Representative, I will consider the students' benefits as priority, to provide the best services and activities for them. To accomplish this goal, I will do my best to communicate with students and make sure to understand the requests from students and get the best results from the legislative board.

To balance my effort in both academic performance and duties, time management would be the key. As a dependable college student, procrastination would not be allowed. I will plan the work in a suitable timetable, and I will address it completely. This would be able to me to finish the work, homework assignments and duties from the Student Government, ahead of time, avoiding stress and indecision.

So, your precious vote is very important to me. Please give an opportunity to me to serve all you guys in the Student Government. Thank you very much!

Haley Harris

As your student services issue representative I would like to accomplish and bring positive change to Skagit Valley College. I believe this position is all about representing the students of Skagit Valley College and bringing about solutions to their campus concerns. I will make myself available to students so that they can voice their concerns and I will in turn accurately communicate their concerns to the committee. I will purposely set aside time every week to meet and talk to students so they can voice their anxieties and concerns to me. Thanks for your time and vote Harris.

Started from last fall quarter, I was employed to work at the Cardinal Bookstore. I would like to have the opportunity to represent your concerns to faculty and administration. Because I also plan to move in this country in the future, I will pay more attention to what student needs so I really willing to have this position.

Representative at Large

Penny Lockbeam

I have had years of leadership experience managing up to 50 employees while wearing many hats, as well as running multiple companies independently in remote locations as the sole employee.  Working in Customer Service for most of my life has given me the ability to communicate with people.  These experiences taught me how to compromise and resolve conflicts with individuals on a one to one basis to come up with the best solutions.
I am very versatile and I get along well with others.  I also enjoy problem solving. There are many ways to do something; everyone is unique. I feel that as a leader having an open mind and listening and considering others opinions is a crucial.

I am currently the (American Welding Society) AWS student chapter treasurer, a member of the S & A Budget Committee and I served on the Trade Day Panel.  This position requires that I be organized and I interact and problem solve regularly with the students.
Participating in student government will give me the chance to use these skills to help out our school in any way that I can.  I would like to accomplish a variety of goals including representing the student to the best of my abilities, and I will bring a strong work ethic and high level of participation to the position to which I am chosen.

I would accomplish this by attending weekly meetings, learning as much as I can about the position as well as devoting the time as needed to complete my job to the best of my abilities.  I am often asked to assume leadership roles in the positions that I have held in the past.  This is because I take the time to listen to people, and I am will to put in the extra work to make projects successful.  I will bring this high level of commitment to this position.

I am out of school daily by 12:20PM which would enable me to participate in the weekly meetings as well as any other time needed to accomplish my duties.  Being an organized person allows me to multi-task and to effectively manage time.  These skills make me an excellent candidate for these positions.

Heather Grambo

I haven't been involved in government before but I have experience in a leadership role through a variety of activities. I was a group leader for our cross country fundraiser where we went to various businesses and asked for donations. I am cooperative, innovative and energetic and I believe that I am able to work with others easily and efficiently.

What I would like to accomplish as being a representative at large is to bring various new ideas and issues to the student government to help make Skagit Valley College a better place for students. To accomplish this goal I will talk with the students of Skagit Valley College and ask them what they like about the school and about the concerns or issues they may have with it.

For this position I will set aside time each week that will be dedicated to working with all of the students in student government, as well as time for working with the students attending Skagit Valley College.
