Cardinal Newspaper
WelcomeThe Cardinal Newspaper is produced by students at Skagit Valley College. We operate as a small club in conjunction with the Journalism classes. First-year Journalism students serve the paper as reporters while also exploring the other aspects of production. Advanced Journalism students and club members comprise the production staff. Journalism classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. during Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters at the Mount Vernon Campus of Skagit Valley College. These positions include Editor, Assistant Editor, and Advertising Manager, but positions and responsibilities are flexible dependent on individuals' strengths. Training will be available Spring Quarter 2011. It is recommended that you enroll in Journalism 101, but not required. Some journalism or publishing experience will be required. The Cardinal is now easier to find!September 24, 2010Thanks to Ben St. Germain, the gatekeeper of Skagit.edu, the Cardinal now has a svelte new web address. You can now access the Cardinal's information on the Skagit.edu website, including our online archives, at Journalism Classes ExpandedSeptember 17, 2010Starting in Fall of 2010, the Journalism classes (101, 201, 202) are now five credits. This mean's that Cardinal Staff Writers have twice as much class time to work with their instructor, the Cardinal production staff, and each other. The Cardinal is always looking for more writers and photographers. If you would like to contribute news articles, opinion pieces, or tips, there are several ways you can do so.StudentsIf you are submitting articles for credit in another class, please observe that we would like to receive your articles two weeks before the issue date. Journalism students get priority for space in the paper, but we will notify your instructor of story submission even if we are unable to print it right away.Join the Journalism ClassJournalism 101 - Newspaper Reporting and ProductionJournalism 201 - Newspaper Production Journalism 202 - Advanced JournalismAll Journalism classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. during Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters at the Mount Vernon Campus. Become a CorrespondentIf you want to contribute regularly to the Cardinal, but are unable to enroll in the Journalism classes, contact us about becoming a Correspondent for a regular column or beat.The Cardinal is looking for a student or students attending Whidbey, South Whidbey, or San Juan Campus locations that would like to report on news and events.Become an Assignment PhotographerIf you have an interest in and aptitude for photography, you can contribute to the Cardinal as an assignment photographer. Assignment photographers take photos to compliment articles being written by other reporters. The Cardinal typically runs a Photo Feature in every issue as well. Simple digital point-and-shoot cameras are available.Students can also choose to contribute in the same ways as Non-Students. | Non-StudentsSubmit Articles as a ContributorIf you are a community member, possible contributions include coverage of local events, press releases, or opinion pieces on community issues.Write a Letter to the EditorIf you would like to provide feedback, ask questions, or voice your opinion on any topic of interest, send your Letter to cardinal.news@skagit.edu.
