MV Vice President

Tyler Henderson

Hello, my name is Tyler and I am running for Vice-President this year. I am determined to do an outstanding job in office which includes making sure that the Student's at Skagit Valley College get their say when they want something to happen. I have served as a senior patrol leader in the scouting organization on two separate occasions adding up to over 3 years. I have led council's, conference's, service projects and fun activities. I know how to run a meeting and how to get people to do things. I advanced to the top rank in scouting, and I can do the same in Student Government. I know how to delegate responsibility so that the work and decisions are evenly balanced.

My goal is to help run the meetings and responsibilities smoothly, and to grow the membership of the clubs. I plan to do this by working hard to give the club governments everything they need to grow their attendance such as getting paperwork through efficiently and supporting their club meeting days by advertising and supporting them in committee's and meetings. I Hope to reach out to students not participating in activities with fun and involved activities.

I plan to balance my schoolwork and Student government duties with relative ease, as I am taking an easier credit load in 2011-2012 then I am this year. I appreciate your time and hope for your support.

MV Campus Treasurer

XiXi LuYang

I used to be the president of student associations when I was in middle school and high school, so I am capable of organizing events well, managing the daily routine, and cooperating with other people.  In addition, I've been working for the International Program as a student assistant since last quarter; therefore, I have pretty good experience of working in the office in SVC.

I would like to accomplish developing ongoing liaison with clubs and other subsidized programs and oversee the attendance and perform of members participating.

First, I will mobilize all the representatives to carry out more club and other activities for students; as far as possible let every student find their interested club and enjoy the school life and attain benefit from their activities.  Second, I would like to help all new representatives know each other well in order to create a harmonious internal working environment and become an efficient team.

Basically, I prefer to work daily to finish projects step by step.  Then, I'd love to work longer on every Thursday or Friday as a weekly summary day.  The main tasks on summary day are finishing my current week's projects and planning my projects for the coming week.

MV Campus Secretary

Kennith Herrick

I am running for student treasurer because I feel that the budget crisis is a very important issue for students and that my experiences serving on the S&A budget committee, will help me do my job. Recently, I've been politically active and supported our college at the Olympia Rally at the state capitol, protesting tuition hikes across the board for Washington students. I've also worked with Excel & Quickbooks and am familiar with the processes used at the college meetings. I have a part time job as a Medical Transcriptionist that makes me an effective note-taker while listening. I also enjoy presentations with people to explain the situation behind the numbers. I keep a balanced checkbook and understand the importance of saving money.

You should vote for me because I understand the difficulty in coming up with a balanced budget that is fiscally responsible and has little human impact. As treasurer, I would fully support programs that offer professional development for students in this economy as I understand that is important too and is a vital part of getting hired. I also am volunteering at Skagit Community Action Center two hours per week helping to update their database of food supplied to the various food banks in Skagit County.

I have a lot of spare time that I would like to dedicate to making the college better and towards our community in general, and I am prepared to be busy for this next year.

Student Services Issues Representative

Tyler Jones

In the years I have spent in school, I have been witness to many elections; and with those come many complaints. I have seen and heard many of my peers have complaints about how the things are being done at school. And sometimes I have even heard a resolution to the complaint. The problem boils down to the students not being heard and not having their needs met.

I don't have much experience governing an entire student body, but I do have experience with being a group leader. Last Spring, I was a member of the school's Rainbow Alliance. The club president quit because it was "too much work", the members left because the leadership was poor, and a club of twenty became a club of four. This Fall, I stepped up and took charge. With the help of the club vice president, we rebuilt the club; we recruited new members and created a group unlink any in years past. My main goal with the club this year was not "let's be on the street protesting anything and everything, EQUALITY ROCKS!" as it was before. I made a club I would want to be in, I made a club that was focused on community. I have created a group that many feel is closer than most families—we held each other up when we were struggling and we were there for each other in triumph and in failure. In my group there is a sense of safety, togetherness, and family.d

If elected, that would be my goal. My mission would be to create a sense of community within the campus and to make sure students feel safe. To build this sense of safety, I would be sure that students have their concerns brought to the attention of the administration and get the floor time that they deserve. Many students feel the administration doesn't realize there are faces attached to our student ID #. I would do my best to make sure the administration doesn't brush off the student concerns and grievances; because if students don't feel safe in their own school, what kind of school can we hope to be?

In order to manage my time to fit the needs of the position, I will make myself available on campus. I can already be on campus in various locations for at least six hours a day; and being president of one of the most active clubs on campus, I have become accustomed to doing homework late at night and in the early morning, this year I have a lot of practice with time management and putting many hours toward the school as well as my school work.

Technology and E-Learning Outreach Representative

Lam Pui Ki (Queenie)

Hi! I'm Queenie Lam and I'm an international student who is from Hong Kong. I'm friendly and talkative. I've had experience in student government in The Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education. My position was an activities director and my section included a total of three people. Mostly, our job was to create some activities to provide entertainment for the students. To help other students is my goal, also this is the reason why I want to be part of the student government. I can handle different kinds of positions because I had extra time and I can use it to achieve my goal. I usually gave a hand to the other leaders in student government and I can do it in Skagit Valley College. I've chosen to apply fo the Technology and E-Learning Outreach Representative because I'm good at fixing technological's problems. If I can successfully became part of the student government, I'd like to help people out no matter what is needed. I would be able to put in 6 hours or more per week for this position, and it could change it to more hours if the students needed me.

Transportation, Safety, and Parking Representative

Lei Ting Fan (Kay)

My name is Fan, Lei Ting (Kay). I am an international student from Hong Kong, and I have been studying in Skagit Valley College for two years. When I was studying in the high school in Hong Kong, I worked in the student government and a little class government in my class for a year. It was good experiences to work for the school because I learned a lot from it. Therefore, I hope my experiences in high school can help me to work for SVC. Even though it will be much different to use English to communicate with people all the time, I believe I can make it. As an international student, it will be a good experience to work in the U.S. I look forward to know how to operate a college, learn more about the America culture, and become more mature through this special experience. I am ready and happy to contribute for Skagit Valley College.

Club Relations and Communications Representative

Jordan Parr

By running for Club Relations and Communications representative, it is my goal to expand on the already growing cooperation between the campus clubs. It is my primary objective to bring all aspects of student life into a larger sense of campus community so that no groups feel that their voice has been unheard. If the organizations and people aren't being heard by the individuals who they elect, then those in elected leadership positions are failing to do their job— I will do my job if elected. The opinions and convictions of those whom I represent will be welcome and will be considered during the decision making processes that involve the organizations I represent. My philosophy of leadership is at it's core one of representation first, I will do everything in my power to make sure that the goals and intentions of the student government reflect those of the people we represent.

I hope to accomplish several goals to increase the cooperation and communication between the clubs and the student government. As a representative for the student organizations I plan to focus on mediation between the clubs, representation for the clubs within the student government, and a policy of clear, open channels of  communication for all parties involved.  By pushing for an open door policy for any and all club members and concerned students, I hope to provide access to information with the specific interest in providing funding for the various organizations to establish effective, socially stimulating, and educational environments for their members. I also hope to provide information for any club looking to increase membership or any individual looking to establish a new organization within the school, and to be the channel through which individuals approach the student leadership in regards to establishing a new organization.

Because of many experiences with leadership positions and interpersonal communication and mediation, I feel I am an excellent candidate for the Club Relations and Communications Representative. My experience within the Navy facilitated situations in which I served as a mediator and a leader. I have led and assisted individuals who are already motivated and passionate about what they do, as the majority of the clubs on campus are. It also reinforced my views on leadership: you must represent the people who elect you, not your personal agenda. As the president of Phi Theta Kappa, I truly can see the necessities of the role, have been exposed to the club leadership, and understand the commitment I am making by running for this office. My ability to adequately perform the duties expected of me while still managing the other responsibilities within my life is an aspect of myself that I am proud of. I would not run for this office if I did not have the highest confidence in my level of commitment to my fellow students as well as my academic progress.

I sincerely hope my experience, commitment, and ideas will be found useful among the student leaders, student organization members and student body, and that I am able to serve the entirety of the student body with them as the Club Relations and Communications Representative for the student government at our school.

Keisuke Katamune

In my high school, I was involved with two different committees; the School Festival committee and Ball Sports Festival committee, in which I was the chairman. I was also in the Judo club. I longed to be a student a university. To be compatible with learning these activities, I learned how to manage time well. Also, the system had changed from when I was in charge, which often requires me and others to do things differently. That is stressful because we need to devise new methods.

I have organized the Student Volunteer Group to support the people in Cambodia and to enlighten some of the ignorant Japanese people about world issues such as the global warming when I was a student. I would like to tell what I have learned from this experience. There are two points you should know. First of all, flexibility is valuable when managing a group. Even if we prepare extra well for something, unforeseen circumstances still happen frequently. We must not get ahead of ourselves when making a decision in such a situation. Moreover, we need to listen to the student voice. In the case of student government, we should know what others students want to make our school better. As a leader of this organization, I needed to listen to the member’s complaints about the organization, the request of the people in Cambodia. I also talked with the company to support us financially, which put a demand on me to learn how to negotiate. These experiences I have had are useful for me to be involved with the government.

We need to know what the students want. Surely, we are representatives of them. But we cannot solve all of problems on campus and in the professor’s care. There may be many students with splendid ideas to improve the college. So, I would like to build a system to reflect the student opinion on the government’s decision efficiently.
We have many ways to collect ideas. For managing the budget, I think hearings are not enough. We need to know more about the clubs and committees. Knowing what the student wants make the college the better place. There are two main ways.

First of all, we need to take questionnaire to both professors and students who have more or less complaints about the college. For example, we can do a survey for parking.

Secondly, we can set the box to recruit the idea near the cafeteria. We do not need to know the name of students. Some people do not want us to know their own name. Also, they can post their idea anytime they want.

I have many things to do. Surely, I should do my best to study as a student. Also, I have been a member of Calling All Colors and the tennis team. But, I have confidence that I will be able to studying with these activities even if I can be a member of Student Government. I was a busier person before when I was a student in the high school and the university. These experiences have taught me how to manage time efficiently.
