LIA Registration Procedures
THE FOLLOWING STEPS ARE FOR MOUNT VERNON CAMPUS LIA STUDENTS.
(Whidbey Island Campus LIA students, click here: Whidbey Island Campus LIA)
To register for MOUNT VERNON Learning Into Action, a student must:
Complete an Online Orientation and Quiz (see LIA Forms page) or attend one of the Learning Into Action group orientations held on campus (see listing below). Orientations should be completed prior to the quarter in which the student will carry out the project. The dates/times/location for these will be listed on this Web site, and the LIA Information Board (in hallway by Counseling and Career Services Center).
Orientation information covers program procedures, course objectives, contract completion, community resources and the forms needed to complete your project.
Students should use the LIA Drop-in hours, which are listed on this site and the LIA Information Board, to meet with the LIA Coordinator for signatures and registration numbers.
Identify what type of learning experience he or she is interested in. It is highly recommended that students select a project which provides a "real world" look at a career of interest. Students are encouraged to use program resources such as the Learning Into Action Opportunity Board, the Learning Into Action database on this website, and faculty members' suggestions to decide on a project/placement.
Set up a LIA placement. Students are responsible for obtaining their LIA placement in the community or on-campus. Other independent or department-assistant projects are developed with a faculty sponsor and/or the LIA Coordinator.
The foundation steps may be done in any order: request the sponsorship of a SVC faculty member related to the project discipline; plan a project and at least three learning objectives to guide the project; arrange for a placement and get a site supervisor. Once a student has chosen a placement, has a site supervisor and faculty sponsor, he/she must complete the Applied Learning Contract with signature approval of objectives from supervisors and then the LIA Coordinator. Students may download the Applied Learning Contract and other Forms by visiting our LIA Forms & Links Page.
Once the Learning Contract has been completed and learning objectives have been approved by all supervisors, the Learning Into Action Coordinator will give the student the information needed to register.
