This is our chance to shine a light, to ask, to learn. There is no better time then now, and no minds more prepared to learn then ours. We are the stewards of civilization and the planet earth. We will take the knowledge gained now into the future, and carry its significance in our heart and soul. We will shine a light. Together our minds will diversify, expand, and proliferate.

Now is the time! The time to grow, and nurture, and find meaning in life is right now. We are the future, and we will set our world free. Free our minds, and the rest will follow. The past can no longer burden us, the future is imminent, and now is the time to come together as one united efficacy. Now is the period of unity.

Hold sacred these truths! Sanctify our journey through these halls, through these words, and through these lessons. Give to us the torch of knowledge and we will light a fire. Give to us the passion of life and learning and we will know no bounds. We can turn this world upside down and shake it until curiosity is satisfied, we can shake it until our mind is ready. We can shake it!

Our motives are pure and genuine. We give back more then we receive. We cherish the knowledge we hold and honor our teacher by paying it forward. We will clear and light a path, then forge ahead into the darkness. To the world we give ourselves, and in return the world is ours to nurture, love, and respect. We need our help. Unity through diversity is the only true and enduring unity. You and I are one together, and our accomplishments are gauged and measured by what can be gained from our actions.

This is more then a grade. This is more then a grade point average. It's beyond a career, a job, or a resume, and it's more exciting then an activity. This is charity. It's passion. It's patience, care, understanding, and community. It is the essence of the multicultural experience. It's breathing life deeply into our lungs and tasting meaning. This is deep, meaningful and complex. This is our chance to shine a light on the darkness and enhance the existence of humanity. We are enlightenment!  This is more then we ever thought we could accomplish. This is our opportunity! This is a chance we share.

I am an international student. I've lived in my home country Bulgaria for 18 years. I've been to the Czech Republic, England, and Syrbia. I came here 3 years ago. Traveling has introduced me to different people and their culture. This, somehow, has given me a better understanding of other peoples' customs and way of thinking. It's really helpful in the interaction with people from other parts of the world, because it has made me more open-minded and appreciative of others' cultures.

When I was in my home country, I was part of the Bulgarian Youth Parliament. There we had to make important decisions. We were discussing crucial young people's problems, and were trying to find any solutions. It was a very responsible and honorable position. This taught us how to interact with others better and be open to people's opinions. I learned that the path to the resolution of a problem is talking and predicting possible outcomes. Each opinion and thought are valuable, and deserve to be heard. Arguing is a sign of not getting the work done

I have also been an employee at the Cardinal Bookstore at Skagit Valley College for one year. I've been meeting new people every day and helping them by answering questions about books and classes. The interaction with other students has taught me how to react in different situation, which is a very valuable lesson. I believe that all the knowledge I've gained from my previous experiences will help me be a valuable member of the Student Government. The better communication between its members and students, the better results. I am a person who never gives up until the problem is resolved. Nothing is going to stop me unless I know I've done my best to help somebody in need.

I would like to accomplish several things. I want the students to become more open about the problems which are bothering them and share them with members of the government. There should be trust between the college people and the government. I want to prove that we are here to help, by looking for the best resolution, and work hard enough to meet most people's expectations.

Knowledge, communication, and work are in the center of achieving my goals. Good communication with others will let me understand what they need. The knowledge I have gives me ideas of what to do in order to help. Working hard is the way I will succeed.

Good time management is the key of getting the work done. As a student, I have a lot of responsibilities. Willingness to succeed, however, will give me the strength I need to be able to fulfill the expectations of the government. Postponing is not a solution, but a burden. If I focus on what has to be done first and what second, I will always be able to finish on time.

Hi everyone:

My name is Chia-I, Lai. I am from Taiwan. It is my great pleasure to have this opportunity to join this election in student government. My position for the student government is Mount Vernon Campus Secretary/Treasurer Representative. My experience I have had for this position is the secretarial work for my previous jobs. I worked as an administrative assistant in the business office for more than 3 years. My responsibilities included managing internal and external mail responding to inquiries on behalf of the sales manager, creating and supporting databases, word processing and writing reports, and also preparing the agenda for all the business meetings with our customers oversea. I believe these experiences will help me in this position. I would like to learn about leadership and communication skill, social skills and more importantlyI would like to learn how to work in a collaborated group work and problem-solving. The very first thing I will do is to set goals and create action steps and prepare some time to actually make it become a reality and further provide ways to track and review my progress. I have class everyday so I believe I am able to dedicate myself at least 6 hours per week after class to serve in this position.

Ralph Nader once said, "I start with the premise that the function of leadership is to create more leaders, not more followers"  To be a leader one does not have to govern an activity but encourage others to give of themselves. It is about inspiration and initiative.  When it comes to creating leaders, a person with good leadership skills motivates people to realize their full potential and a great leader does not always have to be in front but can walk beside, helping along the way.

Throughout high school I was involved in multiple activities where I held a leadership position. I was the sophomore class secretary, volunteered for the Jean Thompson's Children's Hospital Guild, took part in HOBY Leadership Camp at Gonzaga and worked with clubs to help the community.  Since high school I have fallen away from my passion of volunteering and being in a leadership position because of school but now more than ever I want to get others involved.

Most students get involved in there school because it "looks good on college applications" but why let that be the only reason?  At one point everyone does something because it will benefit them in the future but hopefully not only I can get the students involved but also hooked on being a leader like I have been.

It's human nature to curiously explore our surroundings and come to some rational conclusion. While you cannot dam up this waterfall of consciousness, instead you must passively acknowledge this incredible waterfall; stand underneath and let a special moment beat down against your body to immerse toward a level unthought-of and absorb; then pulling out to catch your breath. While it seems overwhelming, it is essential to reminisce and captivate this rare bestowal. Look beyond the face-value of your environment, your fast-paced culture, your structured day. Break out of your self-induced daze. Our world is an endless illuminated hallway lined with closed doorways. Open a few and experience a sense of entrancing wonder—an existential moment as you comb through newfound surroundings.

Oh, right…I am your Transportation, Safety, and Parking Representative. Although a new addition to the team, I feel that I can bring a unique perspective to the table. I hope to gain leadership skills with this experience granted to me. Students should know I am willing to listen to suggestions and concerns. My door is always open, so to speak.

This is a great year for your student government.  With effective student leadership, involvement in government is a great way to learn, grow, and meet the needs of other students.  Your involvement is the key.  If you have ideas of how the government can better serve SVC students, please contact an officer or representative or run for office yourself
