Transfer Credit Evaluation

If you have previously taken college coursework at another accredited instituation or earned other prior learning credit (AP scores, IB scores, Joint Service Transcripts etc.) you may be able to use it for your benefit at Skagit Valley College. Previous classes or prior learning credit may establish placement and/or apply toward a degree or certificate at SVC. For more information about transfer credit, please see SVC's Credit for Prior Learning policy.

You should request an evaluation if you...

  1. Plan to earn a certificate, associate degree, or bachelor’s degree at SVC, AND
  2. Want to use course credits earned from another college to fulfill certificate or degree requirements.

You should NOT request an evaluation if you...

  1. Do not plan to earn a certificate, associate degree, or bachelor's degree at SVC

Placement

You may use an official or unofficial college transcript to establish placement at Skagit Valley College. It is recommended that you establish placement before you attend a New Student Registration event.

Option 1: Email your unofficial college transcript(s) to enrollment@skagit.edu and request placement.

Option 2: Request an official transcript be sent to eval@skagit.edu and then notify enrollment@skagit.edu that you would like placement.

Option 3: Bring your unofficial transcript to a New Student Registration event and request placement at the Placement Station.

This will process will establish placement at SVC, but it will not result in credits being transferred to SVC. In order for any courses to apply to your degree pathway at SVC, you must have an official transcript evaluated for transfer credits.

Official transcripts submitted to the college become the permanent property of the institution. Once received, transcripts will not be returned to the student or forwarded to any other institution or third party.

Step 1: Order official transcripts or prior learning results.  Transcripts and prior learning results will not be accepted as official if they are emailed by the student or delivered in an opened envelope.

  • Electronic transcripts or prior learning results should be sent to eval@skagit.edu.
  • Paper transcripts or prior learning results should be mailed to Skagit Valley College Enrollment Services, 2405 E. College Way, Mount Vernon, WA 98273.

Step 2: Submit a Transcript or Prior Learning Evaluation Request so that our Evaluation Team knows what degree plan you are pursuing at SVC. This also notifies us to expect official transcripts or prior learning results.

Students who took classes in coutries or regions where English is not the first official language of government must obtain a course by course international transcript evaluation.

Step 1: Choose an agency from the NACES web page to complete your course by course international transcript evaluation. You are responsible for paying for the transcript evaluation process

Step 2: Submit the course by course international transcript evaluation to SVC.

  • Electronic transcript evaluations should be sent to eval@skagit.edu.
  • Paper transcript evaluations should be mailed to Skagit Valley College Enrollment Services, 2405 E. College Way, Mount Vernon, WA 98273.

Step 3: Submit a Transcript or Prior Learning Evaluation Request so that our Evaluation Team knows what degree plan you are pursuing at SVC. This also notifies us to expect official transcripts or prior learning results.

Evaluations take up to 8 weeks after the Evaluation Team receives the evaluation request and all transcripts or prior credit results. Evaluations may not be completed before the quarter begins, so students must be responsible for their enrollment and ensure that they do not repeat any classes at SVC.

The Transfer Evaluation System (TES) is a tool to assist you in understanding how the college credits you completed from another accredited institution will transfer to SVC. If the course and/or school is not listed on TES, an equivalent currently does not exist. However, that does not necessarily mean the course won’t be transferred or the school won’t be recognized.

Go To Transfer Evaluation System

The following courses will not transfer to SVC:

  • Courses numbered below 100
  • Courses specific to one religion
  • English as a Second Language/English Language Acquisition courses
  • Non-credit continuing education courses
  • Courses graded below a ‘D’ or equivalent

Important Notes:

  • SVC is on the quarter system. Credits from colleges and universities on a semester system transfer by a multiple of 1.5 (Example: 3 semester credits = 4.5 quarter credits).
  • Transferred courses will not appear on your official SVC transcript, but there will be a note referring to how many transfer credits were accepted.
  • Transferred courses will display in ctcLink as the SVC course equivalent, not the original course name and number.
  • Transferred courses will display in ctcLink as completed on the date the credits were transferred, not when the course was actually completed.
