Christina CastorenaSkagit Valley College is pleased to announce the appointment of Christina Castorena as its new vice president of student services. Castorena began her role in August 2026, bringing 25 years of experience in Washington’s community and technical college system and extensive leadership experience in student success, enrollment management, and expanding access to higher education.

Throughout her career, Castorena has held executive and senior leadership positions at Bellevue College, Edmonds College, and Everett Community College, including serving as vice president of student services, interim president, interim associate vice president for student affairs, dean of student development and diversity advocacy, and associate dean for diversity.

“Christina brings a wealth of experience, a collaborative leadership approach, and a strong commitment to helping students succeed,” said SVC president Dr. Tom Keegan. “Her expertise in student services, institutional leadership, and creating pathways to educational opportunity will be a tremendous asset to Skagit Valley College and the communities we serve.”

Castorena has led numerous initiatives focused on improving the student experience, including redesigning advising and onboarding processes, strengthening first-year experience programs, and expanding access to basic needs resources. Her work has also included developing student success programs, improving financial aid processes, and leading strategic enrollment initiatives that increased student applications and enrollment.

In addition to her institutional leadership, Castorena served as a Guided Pathways coach for the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, supporting three community colleges in implementing comprehensive student success initiatives, including two Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs).

As a former Skagit County resident and parent of a former SVC Running Start student, Castorena brings a personal connection to the college and the communities it serves.

“I am very familiar with the college and the community,” said Castorena. “As a proud Latina and first-generation college graduate, SVC’s commitment to equity, access, and belonging aligns with my values and professional aspirations.”

Looking ahead, Castorena plans to focus on strengthening relationships with students and employees, aligning institutional priorities, and expanding opportunities to support student success. She also sees opportunities to leverage technology to improve student services and further strengthen SVC’s capacity as a Hispanic-Serving Institution.

“My hope is that employees feel heard and supported, students feel represented and know their voices are informing our work, and that we continue strengthening partnerships across the college and throughout our communities,” Castorena said.

Castorena emphasizes that students are at the center of her leadership philosophy and wants current and prospective students to know they have a place at SVC.

“SVC cares about students and the communities we serve,” she said. “You will experience a welcoming campus, caring staff and faculty, and supportive services and programs. You belong at SVC!”
