Canvas

Canvas is the main platform for online coursework. Students and instructors can use it to support their courses with web-based activities including, but not limited to, sharing course documents, having online discussions, completing quizzes and assignments, viewing your gradebook, and communicating with each other. While you should primarily use Canvas through the Canvas website, you can also download the Canvas Student App for your Android or iOS device.

Library Resources

SVC Libraries offer many web-based resources such as eBooks, articles, and streaming videos. If our library does not have what you need, librarians will help you get materials from other libraries. SVC students have the ability to check-out laptops to take home. The laptops are available on a first come, first serve basis and must be returned after the designated duration.

One of the most popular library services is Ask a Librarian: An on-demand 24/7 live chat reference service.  Your questions will be answered by a participating librarian from our worldwide network of reference librarians. Be sure to enter your email address to receive a transcript of your chat session.

Ordering Textbooks

For convenience, the Cardinal Bookstore at SVC offers low risk and a wide variety of competitive prices for new, used and rental textbooks. The syllabus of your course should have the textbook and the instructor contact information. In case you are unable to find that information about the required course materials you can always contact your instructor. For more information, contact the bookstore or visit the bookstore on the Mount Vernon campus.

Use the bookstore’s tool to find your textbooks

Test Proctoring

Most of distance courses at Skagit Valley College include online quizzes or tests. But, some instructors may require that you take these assessments in the presence of a proctor. A proctor is a person that administers tests to student within the parameters established by the course instructor. Your instructor will let you know if proctored testing is required along with deadlines and other guidelines. When in doubt contact your instructor as soon as possible.

Acceptable test proctors your instructor may ask you to use include, but not limit to:

  • SVC Testing Center service at Mount Vernon Campus, at Whidbey Island Campus, at San Juan Center.
  • A librarian at a school or public library
  • College testing centers
  • Learning/Tutoring centers
  • Educational officers of a corporation, military installation, or correctional facility

If the instructor makes recordings available to students, you will access them through a Panopto link(s) found inside of your Canvas course. You can view Panopto recordings on your computer or a mobile device (iPhone and  Android). The added benefits of class recordings include reviewing lecture materials until you are able to understand difficult concepts and take notes.

Google Apps

Google apps are available within each student’s MySVC email account. Once logged in to the student’s MySVC email account, Google Apps can be located in the upper right corner by clicking on the series of tiles. The apps allow students to access online resources (a word processor, slides, etc), collaborate in real time, and share them with others easily. The documents stored in Google Drive can be accessed from any computer with internet access; some applications can also be accessed offline as well.

Office 365

Office 365 is available to all SVC students for free while enrolled in courses. It can be downloaded on multiple devices and provides access to applications including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Skype for Business. Office 365 is a good option for students who may not have the Microsoft Office Suite installed on their personal device.

Instructions for downloading Office 365:

Emergency Text Alerts
