Online courses rely on respectful, thoughtful communication. Whether you're participating in a discussion, sending an email, or working with classmates, your words help create a positive learning environment.

These guidelines can help you communicate professionally and respectfully in your online courses.

Be respectful

Treat your classmates and instructors with the same courtesy you would in a face-to-face classroom. Respect different perspectives, ask questions in good faith, and focus on ideas rather than individuals.

When you disagree with someone, explain your viewpoint respectfully without making personal attacks or dismissive comments.

Communicate clearly

Most communication in an online course happens through writing, so take a moment to review your message before sending it.

Write clearly and stay on topic
Use complete sentences when appropriate.
Check your spelling and grammar.
Avoid excessive use of capital letters, which can be interpreted as shouting.
Be mindful that humor and sarcasm don't always translate well in writing

Think before you post

Online discussions are a common part of the classroom experience. Before posting, ask yourself:

Is my response respectful?
Does it contribute to the discussion?
Would I feel comfortable saying this in a face-to-face classroom?

Remember that your posts may remain visible throughout the course.

Protect your privacy and accounts

Your SVC accounts (ctcLink, MySVC, Canvas, etc.) provide access to your coursework and personal information.

Keep your passwords private
Sign out of all accounts when using shared or public computers
Avoid sharing sensitive personal information in discussion boards or other public course spaces
Contact the college promptly if you believe your account has been compromised

Respect intellectual property

Use materials created by others responsibly.

Cite sources when required
Follow copyright and licensing requirements
Don't share course materials or another person's work without permission. This includes not inputting the information into AI, such as ChatGPT
Respect the privacy and confidentiality of classmates and instructors

Participate professionally

Online learning is a collaborative experience and an opportunity to practice respect and civility when engaging with your classmates.

Read discussion prompts carefully before responding
Stay engaged in conversations
Be patient and constructive when others make mistakes
If you experience a conflict or receive an inappropriate message, contact your instructor rather than responding emotionally
