Recruitment Policies
Skagit Valley College values collaborative partnerships with employers and community organizations. These partnerships help prepare students and graduates for successful careers, ensure our programs reflect current and emerging workforce needs, and contribute to the economic vitality of Northwest Washington by developing a highly skilled workforce.
Skagit Valley College allows employers to promote internships, part-time/seasonal opportunities, and post-graduate positions that are aligned with our academic programs.
The following types of organizations and opportunities are not eligible for recruitment:
- Commission-only positions.
- Brand ambassador roles and other positions that require students to engage in on-campus
student sales, leafleting, etc.
- Employers who charge fees to candidates, require applicants to engage in multi-level
marketing, or require a “start-up” investment.
- Employers hiring for marijuana or cannabis-related companies.
- Employers hiring for the adult entertainment industry.
- Employers hiring for positions where work is occurring at the employer’s private residential address, rather than a public company office.
Employer Expectations & Guidelines
Employers who wish to post job and internship opportunities, recruit at SVC career fairs, and/or participate in other campus events are expected to abide by all the guidelines below. These expectations help ensure that all employer engagement activities provide a positive, equitable, and student-centered experience that supports students' educational and career goals.
Equitable Access
All opportunities should be posted to Handshake, Skagit Valley College’s recruiting platform.
Compensation
All jobs must include a clearly stated compensation structure with a guaranteed hourly wage or salary that meets or exceeds applicable minimum wage requirements and is not contingent upon sales, commissions, tips, or other performance metrics.
Unpaid internships must align with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines for internship programs.
Equal Opportunity
Skagit Valley College is an equal-opportunity employer and is committed to providing equitable opportunities for all groups in terms and conditions of employment and personnel practices. SVC does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, and/or gender identity, pregnancy, genetic information, age, marital status, honorably discharged veteran or military status in its programs and employment.
We require that employers recruiting at SVC abide by the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) principles and comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
For more information or questions regarding SVC policies contact Skagit Valley College Human Resources at hr@skagit.edu or 360.416.7794.
Commitment to Student Success & Local Workforce Development
Skagit Valley College is proud to prepare students for high-demand careers through workforce education certificates and degrees that combine classroom instruction with hands-on, industry-relevant learning.
As valued partners, we ask that employers interested in hiring current students support them in completing their educational programs by offering work schedules that allow students to remain enrolled and make consistent progress toward their certificates or degrees. Flexible scheduling, coordination around class times, and encouraging students to stay on track academically help ensure they graduate with the knowledge, technical skills, and credentials needed for long-term career success.
When students complete their degrees and certificates, employers benefit from a more highly skilled, credentialed workforce, while our region benefits from a stronger pool of qualified professionals.
Confidentiality
Due to FERPA and other requirements, employers must maintain confidentiality of student/alumni information and not release it to another organization without the prior written consent of the student/alumni.
Staffing Agencies & Third-Party Recruiters
Staffing agencies and contract positions can be valuable resources for students and recent alumni seeking to launch their careers. Staffing agencies and third-party recruiters may recruit at SVC, so long as they meet all the following requirements:
- Do not charge any fees to job applicants.
- Clearly indicate that candidates will be working with a staffing agency or third-party recruiter.
- Comply with all other SVC recruitment policies and employer guidelines.
