Counseling and Advising
What is Advising?
Advising is here to help you find and understand your educational goals, complete your degrees and/or certificates, explore career options and transfer to your university or bachelor’s program of choice.
Your Advising Team
Your advising team may be made up of one or more of the following people:
Professional Advisors can help with course planning, petitions, Education Plans, transfer or general questions.
This is an advisor for a specific group or grant you applied for, examples would be Workforce Grants, English Language Aquisition, Open Doors, High School Completion, TRIO advisors, CAMP, CAP coaches, or Maestros Para el Pueblo advisors. This advisor can help with anything a professional advisor does plus additional program specific requirements like grant eligibility or workshops.
Faculty Advisors are for students in professional technical pathways (example Automotive, Culinary, etc.) or for students who have completed their Education Plan and intend to transfer to a university or bachelor’s program. They can help with career planning or transfer questions.
What does Advising look like?
Transfer Student Progression
Transfer Students progress through various stages, listed below:
- Committed Student
- First Quarter
- Second Quarter
- Third Quarter
- Fourth Quarter
- Fifth Quarter
- Sixth Quarter
- Graduation/Transfer
Each stage is a part of a Progession Checkpoint. Below is a brief descripiton of each checkpoint. More information about each checkpoint, including what admissions related information can be found lower on the page.
Checkpoint 1 applies to Committed students; it includes New Student Registraton and Summer Bridge sessions.
Checkpoint 2 applies to your First and Second Quarters; it includes attending your First Quarter Experience and a Tranfer Fair.
Checkpoint 3 applies to your Third and Fourth Quarters; it includes attending a Career Fair and/or Transfer Fair.
Checkpoint 4 applies to your Fifth and Sixth Quarters; it includes attending a Career Fair.
Transfer students will meet with an advisor at least four times before they graduate to meet their degree requirements and make sure they are well prepared before transfer to a bachelor’s program.
Checkpoint 1 – Getting started
During this meeting you will attend a New Student Registration or Summer Bridge program, do math and English placement, and register for your first set of classes. This is a great time to ask questions about programs and start to get to know your advisor.
Checkpoint 2 – Discovering your path
During this checkpoint you will receive your Education Plan. Education Plans are a quarter by quarter map of the classes you will take to earn your degree or certificate. This meeting is your chance to make sure you know all the details of your degree, begin to plan your transfer, and learn about resources available on campus
We also encourage you to attend events like the Transfer Fair or Career Fair to learn more about options available to you.
Checkpoint 3 – Plan your future
This is the time for you to decide what the next step after SVC is for you. Where will you transfer? When will you apply for universities? Work with your advising team to explore your options and start gathering your resources.
Checkpoint 4 – Getting ready to graduate!
Let’s make sure you have everything you need to graduate. Have you run a What-If Report or double checked your degree requirements? Have you applied for transfer? If you have questions, don’t be afraid to ask! We are here to help.
