 Course Description  

Examination of community problems, programs and methods of coping with human behavior, conflict, and communication styles. Recognition of diverse ethnicities and environments, cultural issues, delinquency and gangs, and neighborhoods in conflict. Overview of interactive models for use in developing healthy and respected police/community relationships and techniques for problem solving.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Develop a general understanding of the historical and conceptual framework of policing in society.
  2. Discuss the roles for effective communications between the police and community.
  3. Relate how the development of community social forces can interfere with traditional policing attitudes and their subsequent effectiveness.
  4. Describe the potential conflict inherent in the relationship between criminal justice duties and social freedoms.
  5. Explain and differentiate between the barriers to effective communication evident in society.
  6. Discuss the various models that unite the public with the police.
  7. Define the effects of prejudice and how it affects the effectiveness of the criminal justice system.
  8. Differentiate between the various practices utilized in community policing.
  9. Discuss the current trends in community-oriented policing as they relate to society.
  10. Explain the many societal issues in diversity and their effect on communities, crime and the criminal justice system.
  11. Discuss positive methods and suggestions for change within the criminal justice system.
