 Course Description  

Introduction to the legal environment of business as well as the necessity of ethics and social responsibility in management practice. Study of law in the areas of contracts, employment and labor, intellectual property, marketing, consumer protection, product liability, torts, and the environment. Emphasis on application of moral concepts to practical decision making include environment, use of third world labor, use of economic power in the community, whistle-blowing, mitigation of risk, the employment relationship, and industrial espionage.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Define the various stakeholders that influence business decisions and how they impact ethical analysis.
  2. Define various systems for evaluating ethical situations, i.e. rights theories, morality theories, etc.
  3. Define a system for evaluating ethical situations.
  4. Evaluate the levels of corporate social responsibility.
  5. Define various systems available for shaping corporate behavior, i.e. self-regulation, government regulation, and trial law.
  6. Define the relationship of risk to ethical decision-making.
  7. Define the ethical issues related to the employment relationship including whistle-blowing, testing, hiring and firing, affirmative action, privacy, pay, sexual harassment, etc.
  8. Define the ethical issues related to the gathering, concealing and gilding of information including advertising, industrial espionage, full disclosure, etc.
  9. Define the ethical issues related to international business operations including offshore dumping, use of third world labor, bribes, etc.
