 Course Description  

Training for the EMT-Basic level per National Standards Curriculum and abiding by the laws of Washington State. Learn to recognize, assess, and treat medical and trauma-related emergencies at the basic life support level. Preparation for National Registry EMT certification testing.


Prerequisite: In accordance with Washington State Law, must be at least 17 years of age at course start.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Become familiar with emergency medical care, the emergency medical service system, roles & responsibilities to the EMT-Basics, quality improvement and medical direction.
  2. Know basic anatomy & physiology to the EMT-Basic level.
  3. Assess effectively a patient’s vital signs and develop a medical history on each patient using appropriate methods and provide continuing patient assessment.
  4. Safely lift, move and restrain patients without endangerment of self, patient or others, using proper body mechanics and techniques.
  5. Learn the EMT-Basic pharmacokinetics and proper dosage, assistance with, and administration routes.
  6. Perform appropriate treatment for respiratory distress and emergencies. Perform appropriate treatment for cardiovascular emergencies.
  7. Communicate and understand how to relate to a diverse and multicultural population in an emergency situation.
  8. Work as a team member.
