Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Understand the influence of culture on communication, specifically
    • Identifying how personal and cultural values shape interpersonal communication
    • Characterizing cultural patterns in terms of interpersonal concepts
    • Recognizing and describing personal communication styles based on cultural perspectives and attitudes
    • Using empathy to bridge differences in personal and cultural values and build relationships with others
  2. Develop critical thinking skills by applying interpersonal strategies to communications, specifically
    • Listening actively and critically
    • Using analytical skills to develop connections between interpersonal communication and other academic areas and/or individual outcomes
    • Demonstrating appropriate supportive techniques in interpersonal relationships
    • Adapting and applying appropriate communication strategies in dealing with diverse populations and groups

  3. Demonstrate basic interpersonal communication skills, including
    • Identifying and explaining the model, components, conditions, and common terminlogy of interpersonal communication
    • Recognizing and describing how self-concept, perception, language, emotions, and nonverbal behavior affect communication
    • Building confidence in communicating verbally, nonverbally, and in writing, one-on-one, in small groups, and before the class
    • Identifying his/her own self-disclosure and nonverbal behaviors, listening habits, and conflict styles and applying appropriate techniques to improve any that inhibit effective communication
