Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify and explain the major exceptionalities in the areas of cognitive, social, physical and emotional development.
  2. Discuss the role of the teacher/paraprofessional in identifying, individualizing and implementing educational programs for the child with special needs, both disabled and gifted.
  3. Demonstrate an awareness of legal issues pertaining to services for children, families and education professionals.
  4. Articulate a philosophy and understand the implications of early intervention, mainstreaming, full inclusion, self-contained learning environments and a continuum of services for children with exceptionalities.
  5. Explain the importance of the family, culture, community and physical environmental influences on the planning of individualized education programs for children with special needs.
  6. Observe children with special needs in local programs to understand the concept of least restrictive environment and its implications for program development.
