 Course Description  

Survey of current social issues. Includes the impact of attitudes and values influencing perspectives, goals, and outcome expectations of service providers and clients. Looks at social change in the past and controversies surrounding social issues today. Required course for the generalist degree.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Have a general familiarity with a number of significant social issues, and be able to apply critical thinking and communication skills within the classroom for a discussion of these topics.
  2. Think both as social scientist and as a helping professional in evaluating evidence regarding the development of social issues and in assessing their impact on members of the community.
  3. Differentiate between “personal problems or issues” and “social problems or issues.”
  4. Review underlying historical, social, and environmental conditions that have contributed to the development of social issues and problems.
  5. Discuss and describe the role of the media in shaping public attitudes toward social issues.
  6. Communicate effectively with others, within and outside the classroom, in discussing the importance and impact of social problems.
  7. Develop an appreciation for the multiple perspectives with which controversial issues can be viewed and tolerance for the different perspectives on an issue held by other groups and individuals.

  2. A pluralistic approach will be taken to all topics and the mode of instruction used.
  3. Presentation of historical groundwork for all issues and the political influences.
  4. Group assignments where students review specific social issues.
