Dr. Robert M. Gates is a former U.S. Secretary of Defense from 2006-2011 serving under two administrations: President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama. He served 26 years in the Central Intelligence Agency and at the National Security Council and was the director of central intelligence under President George H.W. Bush from 1991-1993. After leaving the CIA, Dr. Gates became president of Texas A&M University. In 2007, Dr. Gates was named one of the year’s most influential people in Time magazine.
Dr. Gates served in the U.S. Air Force and was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1967. A native of Kansas, he received his bachelor’s degree from the College of William and Mary, his master’s degree in history from Indiana University, and his doctorate in Russian and Soviet history from Georgetown University.
This event is co-hosted by the Skagit Valley College Foundation and Community Action of Skagit County. All proceeds will support local veterans in the Skagit, Island, and San Juan Island county communities.
